Initialize Electric Windows

These instructions apply to the Ford Focus Mk2 (DA3) 2004-2012. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The second-generation Ford Focus (C307 chassis, 2004–2011 facelift extending into 2012 in some markets) uses door-mounted window switches with one-touch up and down on the driver’s side from early production and on all four windows from the 2008 facelift onwards. When the battery is disconnected, the windows are physically removed and refitted, or the door wiring is interrupted, the window control module loses its memory of the upper and lower travel limits. Until these are re-learned the windows will move only while you hold the switch, the one-touch feature stops working, and the anti-pinch protection runs in safety-default mode. The fix is a 30-second per-window manual procedure — no scan tool or coding needed.

Before you start

The Mk2 Focus is on the simpler end of the early-2000s Ford family — there is no separate “global window close” function (that arrived on the Mk3 with the keyless-entry hold-down behaviour), and no rain-sensor interaction with the windows. Initialization runs entirely from the door switches themselves; the BCM (Body Control Module) does not need to be commanded.

  • Battery state of charge needs to be healthy. A weak battery causes the window motor to slow down near the top of travel, which the module misreads as the end-stop. Aim for ≥12.4 V at rest before starting.
  • All doors closed. The procedure runs on a single window at a time and the car needs to be otherwise undisturbed.
  • Window seals lubricated if recently removed. If you have replaced the door regulator or the glass, a quick wipe of silicone spray on the felt channels stops the motor stalling against fresh, stiff rubber.
  • Mk2 variants: the procedure is identical between the pre-facelift (2004–2007), facelift (2008–2010), and Estate/Mk2.5 (2010–2012). Cars with one-touch on driver only need to run the procedure on the driver’s side; cars with four-window one-touch run it on each door.

Tools required

None for the standard procedure. Optional:

  • Multimeter to confirm battery voltage at rest
  • OBD-II scanner with full BCM access (only if the procedure refuses to take after three attempts)

Initialization procedure — driver’s side

  1. Switch the ignition to position II (ON, but not cranking). The instrument cluster should be fully illuminated.
  2. Press the driver’s window switch downwards and hold it until the window is fully open. Release.
  3. Pull the switch upwards and hold it until the window is fully closed. Keep the switch pulled for 3 additional seconds after the glass reaches the top seal.
  4. Release the switch. Wait one second.
  5. Press down briefly to confirm one-touch down operates. The window should travel all the way to fully open on a single short press.
  6. Pull up briefly to confirm one-touch up operates. The window should travel all the way closed on a single short press.

Initialization procedure — passenger and rear windows (facelift / four-window cars)

The passenger-side window can be initialised either from the driver’s master switch panel or from the passenger door switch — both routes work. Rear windows initialise only from their own door switches; the master panel re-routes signal but does not own the calibration.

  1. Open the chosen window fully using its own switch, then release.
  2. Close the window fully using its own switch, holding for 3 seconds beyond the top.
  3. Release. Test one-touch down and one-touch up to confirm.
  4. Repeat for each remaining window.

How to verify it has worked

  • A short press of the switch (less than half a second) should send the window all the way to fully open or fully closed without you holding the switch.
  • An obstruction — a hand at the seal — should cause the window to stop and reverse by 5–10 cm. If the window crushes through the obstruction with no resistance, the anti-pinch has not re-armed and you need to run the procedure again.
  • The driver’s switch should still operate all four windows in the four-window facelift cars.

Troubleshooting

The window stops in the middle and reverses every time, then refuses one-touch. The motor is detecting an obstruction that isn’t there. Most likely cause: dry or perished window felt that’s gripping the glass. Spray silicone lubricant into the felt channel, work the window up and down five times to spread it, then re-run the procedure. Second most likely: the regulator scissor mechanism is binding — visible by removing the door card.

One-touch works on the driver’s window but not on the others. On the facelift cars, each window has its own ECU embedded in the door switch pack. Initialise from the door’s own switch, not the master panel. If still no luck, the door switch pack itself is faulty — they’re a known wear item on this generation and a used unit from a breaker is usually under £30.

The window closes one click at a time even after initialization. The anti-pinch is in “learn mode” and the module hasn’t confirmed full-travel position. Cycle the window fully open and fully closed three more times, holding the switch for 3 seconds at each end-stop. This nudges the BCM into accepting the calibration.

Driver’s window refuses to initialise after a regulator replacement. Check that the regulator’s tape grip is fully engaged on the glass — if the glass slips in the grip, the motor encoder loses count. The lower bolt holding the glass to the regulator should be torqued to 6 Nm.

Procedure works, but the windows close on their own after a few minutes. That isn’t related to initialization — it’s the keyless-entry global-close function being triggered accidentally by a key in your pocket, present only on cars with the optional keyless-entry pack. Hold the unlock button on the remote to reverse.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Ford-specific tool to initialize the Mk2 Focus windows?
No. The procedure is owner-method on all Mk2 variants. A Ford IDS or FORScan only becomes necessary if the BCM has logged a “window calibration not learned” fault that refuses to clear via the manual procedure — rare unless the door pack has been swapped.

Why does my Mk2 Focus only have one-touch on the driver’s side?
Pre-facelift Mk2 cars (2004–2007) and lower-trim facelift cars (Style, Studio) shipped with one-touch on the driver’s window only. Higher-trim facelift cars (Zetec, Titanium) added it to all four windows. You can identify which by checking the driver-side master panel: four illuminated symbols above the switches indicates the four-window package.

Will replacing the battery break the window initialization permanently?
No — every battery disconnection requires a re-initialization, but the procedure can be repeated as many times as needed. The BCM doesn’t track how many times it has been calibrated.

Can a weak battery cause the windows to lose their calibration even when nothing else has happened?
Yes, indirectly. When the battery drops below about 10.5 V at start-up, the window control module browns out for a fraction of a second and loses its position counter. The fix is the same re-initialization procedure; the underlying fix is a new battery.

Is there a way to programme the windows to one-touch close when locking the car?
Not on the Mk2 standard. Mk2 Focus cars with the keyless-entry pack have this function (hold the lock button on the remote for 3 seconds, all windows close). Retrofitting this to a Mk2 without keyless entry requires the keyless BCM and is not practical.

For window-related diagnostic trouble codes such as B12B7 or B10A1 that won’t clear after the procedure, see autodtcs.com.
