Trip Meter and Adjust Meter Illumination

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Swift Mk2 (RS) 2004-2010. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 18, 2026

The Suzuki Swift RS (2004–2010) has two independent trip meters (Trip A and Trip B) and an adjustable dashboard-illumination brightness. Both features are controlled from the same small button on the instrument cluster. The trip meter is useful for tracking mileage between fill-ups, journey distances, and fuel economy; the illumination control lets you set a brightness that suits your driving conditions and reduces eye strain on long night drives.

Why You Might Use the Trip Meter

  • Fuel economy tracking: reset Trip A at every fill-up, then divide the litres added by the trip distance to get litres-per-100-km.
  • Trip distance: reset Trip B at the start of a journey to know how far you’ve covered without doing odometer maths.
  • Service interval tracking: use one of the trips to count distance since the last oil change as a backup to the service light.
  • Mileage estimation for tax or expenses: reset at the start of a business trip for an accurate distance log.

Trip A and Trip B are independent — resetting one doesn’t affect the other, so you can use them for different purposes simultaneously.

Before You Start

  • Park before fiddling with cluster controls.
  • The trip-meter button is on the instrument cluster face, typically just below the speedometer on the Swift RS.
  • For illumination adjustment, the headlights or parking lights must be switched on — the brightness control is dependent on the lights being active.

Tools and Supplies

None. Both procedures use only the cluster button.

How to Reset the Trip Meter

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position. The cluster lights up and the trip-computer display becomes responsive.
  2. Press the trip meter button repeatedly. Each press cycles the display between: total odometer, Trip A, Trip B, and back to odometer.
  3. Stop at Trip A or Trip B, whichever you want to reset.
  4. Press and hold the button for about 2 seconds.
  5. The selected trip resets to 0.0 km (or 0.0 miles, depending on the market spec of your cluster).
  6. Release the button. The reset trip is now counting from zero.

How to Adjust Dashboard Illumination

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Switch on the headlights or parking lights — the illumination adjustment is only active when the lights are on.
  3. Press the trip-meter button briefly and repeatedly to cycle through the available brightness levels (typically four to five steps on the AZG/AZH cluster).
  4. Watch the cluster as you press — each press steps the brightness up or down through the range, then wraps around.
  5. Stop pressing when you reach the brightness you want. The setting is retained across ignition cycles.

Verify the Adjustments Worked

  • Trip meter: drive a short distance — the trip you reset should now count up from 0.0.
  • Illumination: turn the lights off and back on — the cluster should now light up at the level you set rather than the previous default.

Troubleshooting

  • Trip display won’t change with button presses. The cluster wasn’t fully ignited (ignition only partially on). Turn the key all the way to ON, not ACC, and retry.
  • Trip won’t reset on long press. Hold the button for at least 2 seconds; a short tap just cycles the display rather than triggering the reset. If a long press still doesn’t reset, the cluster’s button contact may be worn — happens on high-mileage Swifts with years of daily use.
  • Illumination doesn’t change. Confirm the headlights or parking lights are on. The illumination adjustment is a layered control — only active when the lights are powered. Some Swift trims also tie this to the rheostat dimmer on the dashboard; if your car has both, the rheostat overrides the button.
  • Display seems too dim even at maximum brightness. Check the dashboard fuse (Swift RS fuse layout is on the underside of the glove box). A partially-failed dashboard fuse can dim only the LCD backlight while leaving warning lights working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Swift RS have an average fuel economy display?

The standard trip computer on the Swift RS shows odometer, Trip A, and Trip B — it doesn’t display average fuel consumption directly. To calculate it manually: reset Trip A at fill-up, record litres added at next fill-up, divide (litres added / trip km × 100) for litres-per-100-km.

Will resetting Trip A while the engine is running cause any issue?

No — the reset is purely a display-side operation. The engine, transmission, and ECUs don’t see the trip-meter state. Reset whenever you like.

Why is the illumination control on the same button as the trip meter?

Suzuki simplified the cluster control to a single button on the AZG/AZH Swift to save costs. The button behaves contextually: long-press resets the displayed trip; short-press with lights on adjusts brightness. It feels overloaded but works once you learn the patterns.

Can I set Trip A back to a non-zero value (e.g. continue tracking after an interruption)?

No — the only options are reset-to-zero or continue counting from the current value. There’s no way to load a specific starting value through the trip-meter button. If you need precise journey logging, a phone GPS app or a dedicated trip logger is more flexible.
