The third-generation Ford Focus (Mk3, DYB chassis, 2011–2017) tracks scheduled service via the instrument cluster’s information display. After an oil change, brake-fluid replacement, or other scheduled task, the spanner / “Service due” message needs a manual reset — the car can’t detect that the work was done. The Mk3 spans a pre-facelift period (2011–2014) and a 2014.5 facelift with SYNC2/SYNC3 infotainment; the reset procedure differs slightly between the two.
Before you start
The reset works on all Mk3 variants regardless of engine — 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5/1.6 EcoBoost, 1.6 Ti-VCT, 1.6 TDCi, 2.0 TDCi, plus the ST and RS performance variants. Identify your cluster type first: pre-facelift cars have the older Ford “centre console + cluster” layout with hard buttons; facelift cars (registered from late 2014 onwards) have the larger touchscreen and a redesigned cluster.
- Reset only after the actual service. The car has no oil-condition sensor; resetting before the oil change starts a stale interval immediately.
- Sit in the driver’s seat with the door closed. The seat-occupancy sensor and the door-ajar switch feed into the BCM’s “ready” check on the pre-facelift cars; with the door open the reset is suppressed.
- Don’t run the engine. Ignition position II (ON without engine) is the correct state.
- Have at least 25% fuel in the tank. Not strictly required for the reset itself, but a low-fuel chime can mask the cluster’s service messages on power-on.

Reset procedure — pre-facelift cars (2011–2014)
Same accelerator+brake hold as the Mk2 facelift, with slight timing differences.
- Close all doors. Sit in the driver’s seat. Don’t have the smart key on the passenger seat — the BCM checks for a key in the driver’s vicinity only.
- Switch the ignition to position II (ON without starting the engine). All dashboard lights illuminate, then settle.
- Fully press both the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal at the same time. Press firmly — the drive-by-wire accelerator needs full deflection, the brake-light switch needs to register.
- Hold both pedals for approximately 25 seconds. Around 15 seconds in, the cluster’s central display refreshes; the spanner icon flashes briefly, then “Oil Life Reset” or “Service Reset” appears with a percentage figure (typically rising back to 100%).
- Release both pedals.
- Switch the ignition OFF. Wait 2 minutes before switching back on — this lets the BCM commit the new value to non-volatile memory.
- Switch ignition ON. Confirm the spanner icon is no longer illuminated.
Reset procedure — facelift cars (2014.5–2017)
Facelift Mk3 cars use a menu-driven reset via the SYNC2 or SYNC3 head unit, with a fallback to the pedal procedure where SYNC isn’t fitted.
- Switch the ignition ON (engine off) and wait for SYNC to fully boot (around 15 seconds on SYNC2, faster on SYNC3).
- Press the “Settings” tile on the home screen.
- Navigate to “Vehicle” → “Maintenance” → “Oil Life Reset” (SYNC2) or “Reset Now” (SYNC3).
- Press Reset and confirm. The system displays “Oil life reset successfully” within a few seconds.
- If the SYNC menu doesn’t include the option (some lower-trim facelift cars without navigation), use the pedal procedure above — it still works on all Mk3 cluster firmware.
How to verify it has worked
- The spanner / service icon is no longer illuminated on the cluster.
- No “Oil change due” or “Service overdue” message appears at start-up.
- The next engine start produces no service-reminder chime.
- SYNC’s Vehicle Information page (if equipped) shows “Oil Life: 100%” or the full service interval remaining (typically 20,000 km / 12 months on petrol, 22,500 km / 12 months on TDCi diesel under long-life servicing).
Troubleshooting
Pre-facelift: pedal hold doesn’t trigger the cluster refresh. Most common cause — the brake-light switch is faulty (a known Mk3 wear item, symptoms include rear brake lights stuck on permanently or working intermittently). Test from outside the car: pressing the brake should light the rear tail-lights. If they don’t, replace the switch (£12 OEM Ford part, 10 minutes to fit, accessible from the driver’s footwell under the dash).
Facelift: SYNC menu doesn’t show “Oil Life Reset”. The option is sometimes deactivated on lower trims that didn’t ship with the full service module. Use the pedal procedure instead — the cluster firmware accepts both methods regardless of head unit.
Reset clears the message but it reappears at the next start. The reset wasn’t committed to flash memory. Always wait the full 2 minutes with ignition off after releasing the pedals before turning back on. If the issue persists, the BCM has a stored fault — read with FORScan (free version handles the Focus Mk3 BCM reliably).
“Oil Life 0%” displays even after a successful reset. The oil-life percentage on the Mk3 is a calculated value based on engine hours, RPM profile, and elapsed time — it doesn’t have a physical oil-condition sensor. After the reset, the percentage may not refresh on the cluster until the car has been driven for 5+ miles, during which the algorithm re-baselines.
Both pedals to the floor simultaneously is hard to manage. Press firmly with your right foot crossed over to the brake pedal, left foot on the accelerator. With the engine off, the brake servo is depleted and the pedal feels stiff — firm pressure is needed for the brake-switch to register.
Frequently asked questions
Does the procedure work on the Focus ST Mk3?
Yes. The 2.0 EcoBoost ST and 2.3 EcoBoost ST share the same cluster firmware as the standard Mk3. Pedal procedure applies on pre-facelift ST, SYNC menu on the 2014.5+ facelift ST.
What about the Focus RS Mk3?
The Mk3 RS (2016–2018) uses SYNC2 with the maintenance menu accessible via Settings → Vehicle → Maintenance → Oil Life Reset. Pedal procedure also works as a fallback.
What about the Focus Estate (wagon)?
Identical procedure — the estate uses the same cluster and BCM. Trim-level differences (Zetec, Titanium, ST-Line) don’t affect this reset.
Do I need to reset anything else after an oil change on the Mk3?
On petrol Mk3 cars, only the oil-life / service indicator. On the 1.5 / 1.6 / 2.0 TDCi diesel, you may also want to check the DPF status if the car has been doing short-trip work — the DPF has its own warning that clears on its own once a successful regeneration completes (driving 20+ minutes at motorway speed usually triggers it).
Will the dealer’s reset procedure differ?
Ford technicians use IDS or FDRS to perform the reset and log “service performed” against the VIN in the central database. The cluster reset they do is functionally equivalent to this owner procedure; the difference is only in the service-history record. If you keep a paper service book or your own log, this DIY reset is equivalent for the cluster purpose.
