Last updated:
The third-generation Ford Focus (Mk3, DYB chassis, 2011–2017) has one-touch up and down on the driver’s window across all trims, and on all four windows on Titanium, ST, and ST-Line variants. After the 12-volt battery is disconnected, a window regulator is replaced, or the door wiring loom is briefly interrupted, the window control module loses its memory of the upper and lower travel limits. Until these are re-learned the windows move only while you hold the switch, the one-touch feature stops, and the anti-pinch protection runs in safety-default mode. The fix is a 30-second per-window manual procedure — no scan tool or coding needed.
Before you start
The Mk3 Focus uses an updated body control module (BCM) versus the Mk2, with the calibration stored locally at each door’s switch pack. Cars with one-touch on driver only need to run the procedure on the driver’s side; cars with four-window one-touch (Titanium, ST, ST-Line) run it on each door’s own switch.
- Battery state of charge needs to be healthy. A weak battery causes the motor to slow at the seal; the controller misreads this as the upper end-stop and the calibration takes incorrectly. Aim for ≥12.4 V at rest before starting.
- All doors closed and sit inside. Door tilt position affects regulator scissor load enough on the Mk3 to confuse the calibration if you have a door open while running the procedure.
- Ignition ON, engine off. Alternator noise during cranking can cause spurious encoder counts on the Mk3 switch packs.
- Window seals lubricated if recently disturbed. If you’ve replaced the regulator or the glass, a quick wipe of silicone spray on the felt channels stops the motor stalling against fresh, stiff rubber.
Tools required
None for the standard procedure.
Initialization procedure — driver’s side
- Switch the ignition to position II (ON, but not cranking). The instrument cluster should be fully illuminated.
- Press the driver’s window switch downwards (second detent) to drive the window to fully open. If auto-down doesn’t engage yet, hold in the first detent until fully open.
- Pull the switch upwards (second detent) to drive the window to fully closed. If auto-up doesn’t engage, hold in the first detent.
- Once the window reaches the top, continue holding the switch up for 3 additional seconds. This is the calibration trigger — the switch pack records the position as the upper end-stop.
- Release the switch. Wait one second.
- Test one-touch: a brief press down should send the window all the way to fully open without you holding the switch. A brief press up should send it back to fully closed.
Initialization procedure — other windows (four-window cars)
On Titanium, ST, and ST-Line cars with four-window one-touch, repeat from each door’s own switch. The master panel on the driver’s door can move the other windows but cannot calibrate them — this is a frequent source of confusion.
- Open the chosen window fully via its own switch.
- Close fully via its own switch, holding for 3 seconds beyond the top.
- Release. Test one-touch with a brief press.
- Repeat for each remaining window.
How to verify it has worked
- A short switch press sends the window all the way to fully open or fully closed without you holding the switch.
- Anti-pinch test: place a soft cloth at the seal as the window closes; the window should reverse by 5–10 cm on contact.
- Global close via the remote key (on Titanium and higher with the keyless-entry pack, hold the lock button for 3 seconds) closes all four windows on cars with that option.
Troubleshooting
The window stops in the middle and reverses every time, then refuses one-touch. Motor is detecting an obstruction that isn’t there — usually because of stiff or perished window felt gripping the glass. Silicone-spray the felt channel, work the window up and down five times to spread the lubricant, then re-run the procedure with a 5-second hold at the top.
One-touch works on the driver’s window but not on others on a four-window Mk3. Each window has its own controller embedded in the switch pack. Initialise from the door’s own switch, not the master panel.
The window closes one click at a time even after initialization. The controller is in “learn mode” and hasn’t committed the calibration. Cycle the window fully open and fully closed three more times, holding for 5 seconds at the top of each cycle. Usually accepts on the third pass.
Driver’s window refuses to initialise after a regulator replacement. Check that the regulator’s clamp is fully engaged on the glass. If the glass slips in the clamp, the motor encoder loses count. Re-tighten the lower bolt to 6 Nm.
Initialization works briefly but is lost after the next start. The window controller is losing power between key cycles. On the Mk3, this is most often a damaged wire in the driver-side door-pillar rubber boot — the harness flexes through that boot every time the door opens. FORScan will log B-prefix codes if the door pack sees intermittent power.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Ford-specific tool to initialize the Mk3 Focus windows?
No. The procedure is owner-method on all Mk3 variants. Ford IDS or FORScan only becomes necessary if the BCM has logged a “window calibration not learned” fault that refuses to clear via the manual procedure.
How does the Mk3 procedure differ from the Mk2?
The Mk2 used a 3-second hold at the top of close. The Mk3 also uses a 3-second hold but added the “1-second wait” gap before testing. Otherwise the principle is identical. If you’ve owned a Mk2 Focus, the Mk3 procedure will feel familiar.
Why does my Mk3 Focus only have one-touch on the driver’s side?
Lower-trim Mk3 cars (Studio, Style, Zetec on early production) shipped with one-touch on the driver’s window only. Higher-trim Titanium, ST, ST-Line, and the RS added it to all four windows. The driver-side master panel on those cars has four illuminated arrow indicators next to the switches.
Will replacing the battery break the window initialization permanently?
No — every battery disconnection requires re-initialization, but the procedure can be repeated unlimited times. The BCM doesn’t track how many times it has been calibrated.
Is there a way to programme the windows to one-touch close when locking the car?
On Titanium and higher Mk3 trims with the keyless-entry pack, hold the lock button on the remote for 3 seconds — all windows close. Cars without keyless entry don’t have this function; retrofitting requires the keyless BCM and isn’t practical.
