Activate or Deactivate the Auto Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Ford Focus Mk3 (DYB) 2011-2017. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 18, 2026

Ford’s Auto Start-Stop system was offered on most Focus Mk3 variants from 2011 (1.6 TDCi ECOnetic, 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5 TDCi, 1.6 Ti-VCT manual, and 2.0 TDCi). It shuts the engine when the car comes to a stop with the clutch released (manual) or brake held (automatic) and restarts it when you press the clutch or lift off the brake. The system defaults to ON every key cycle (EU regulatory requirement) but can be disabled for the current drive via a dashboard button. This guide covers the manual override, the auto-disable triggers, and when deactivation is sensible.

Before you start

The Mk3 Focus’s Auto Start-Stop button is on the centre console near the gear lever — marked with the standard “A” inside a circular arrow icon. A green light on the cluster confirms the system is armed; the amber “Auto-Start-Stop OFF” message confirms it’s deactivated. The system requires several gate conditions:

  • Battery state of charge ≥ ~75% — tracked by the BMS sensor on the negative terminal.
  • Engine coolant warmed to operating temperature.
  • Outside temperature above approximately 3 °C and below 35 °C.
  • No active diagnostic faults on the dashboard (ABS, ESP, airbag, EPS).
  • Climate-control demand within limits. AC at MAX or heater at full power suppresses auto-stop.
  • For manuals: gear lever in neutral, clutch released, vehicle speed = 0.
  • For automatics: gear lever in D, brake pedal held, vehicle speed = 0.

Tools required

None.

Method 1 — dashboard A-OFF button

  1. Press the A-OFF button on the centre console. Some Mk3 trims label it “ECO” or have it on the upper console next to the hazard switch.
  2. The amber “Auto-Start-Stop OFF” warning illuminates on the cluster.
  3. The engine continues to run at idle when stationary — it will not auto-stop.
  4. To re-enable for the current drive: press the button again. The amber lamp extinguishes; the system re-arms within a few seconds, contingent on the operating-condition gates.

Method 2 — driver seat belt unbuckle

Auto Start-Stop includes a safety override: unbuckling the driver’s seat belt at a standstill disables auto-stop for the rest of the drive. If the engine has already auto-stopped, the seat-belt unbuckle restarts it within about 0.5 seconds.

Method 3 — open the bonnet

Lifting the bonnet triggers the bonnet-ajar microswitch, which the Auto Start-Stop system reads as “do not auto-stop”. This prevents the engine restarting while you have hands in the engine bay.

When to disable Auto Start-Stop

  • Heavy stop-go traffic where the system would cycle several times per minute — frequent restarts add wear to the starter (rated for many cycles but finite).
  • Towing a trailer. Extra mass means each restart pulls more torque from the starter.
  • Cold mornings below 0 °C — the system usually self-disables but manual override is more reliable for the first 5 minutes.
  • Under-bonnet work with the engine running.
  • Older Mk3 cars (5+ years on Auto Start-Stop hardware): if the battery is showing its age, manual override avoids the borderline cycles that strain a tired battery.

Troubleshooting

“Auto-Start-Stop OFF” is permanently illuminated. The system has self-disabled due to one of the gate conditions. Most common on older Mk3s: weak battery — the BMS has decided the battery can’t sustain a restart. Load-test the battery; if older than 5 years on a Start-Stop variant, replacement is overdue. Second most common: a stored fault code in another module (e.g., steering angle sensor after suspension work). Read with FORScan.

Engine auto-stops but won’t restart automatically. Two common causes: (a) battery state of charge dropped below threshold mid-stop — the starter cranks normally on next attempt but the system aborts further auto-stops; (b) on manual Mk3s, the clutch pedal position switch is faulty (a known wear item; ~£25 part, 15-minute fit).

Auto Start-Stop works yesterday but not today. Temperature effect: cold mornings tighten the gates. Drive 10 minutes to warm everything before expecting auto-stop.

System keeps disabling itself after only one auto-stop. Indicates marginal battery health — the BMS classified the recovery from the first restart as borderline. Load-test the battery.

I want Auto Start-Stop to be default-OFF — is there a software setting?
Not factory-officially on the Mk3. Aftermarket “memory modules” exist (around £30–50) that effectively press the A-OFF button automatically at every start. Road-legal because they don’t modify ECU software.

Frequently asked questions

Which Focus Mk3 engines have Auto Start-Stop?
1.0 EcoBoost (most variants), 1.6 EcoBoost, 1.5/1.6 TDCi (ECOnetic variants from 2011, all variants from facelift), 2.0 TDCi. The 1.6 Ti-VCT petrol manual had it as standard on some trims. The Focus ST 2.0 EcoBoost has it on facelift cars; the Focus RS does not (track-focused, removed for weight reasons).

Will disabling Auto Start-Stop hurt fuel economy?
By about 2–4% in urban driving. On motorway the difference is negligible. Most Mk3 owners disable for comfort rather than fuel.

Does the Mk3 use a special starter motor?
Auto Start-Stop variants use a reinforced starter rated for 300,000+ cycles versus the standard 30,000–50,000. Don’t fit a non-Start-Stop starter to a Start-Stop Mk3 without permanently disabling the system.

Will the AC keep working when the engine auto-stops?
Briefly — about 30 seconds of cabin cooling from residual evaporator cold. After that the AC pauses. On hot days with high AC demand, the system suppresses auto-stop entirely.

My Mk3 Auto Start-Stop worked in summer but never in winter — is something wrong?
Probably not. The gate temperature thresholds tighten in cold weather, especially with the heater running. The system can be off below ~3 °C ambient even when everything else is healthy.
