Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Nissan X-Trail Mk4 (T33) 2022-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Nissan X-Trail Mk4 (T33, 2022–present) is electrified — mild-hybrid or e-Power — so it has a high-voltage battery (never touch it) and a 12 V battery that runs the electronics. This guide covers safely disconnecting the 12 V battery, the one you change or isolate for electrical work.

Important: Which Battery This Is

You only ever work on the 12 V battery. Never touch the orange high-voltage cables or the traction/e-Power battery — that’s for trained technicians. The 12 V job below is owner-safe.

Where the 12V Battery Is

On the X-Trail Mk4 the 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover. (Your handbook shows the exact position for your model — check it before you start.)

Disconnecting

  1. Switch the car fully off (not “ready”) and keep the Intelligent Key away from the car. Nissan’s procedure has you open the tailgate, cycle the ignition on then off, and wait 3 minutes for the electronics to power down.
  2. Disconnect the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  3. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down.

Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, allow the system to discharge during that wait.

Reconnecting

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; tighten and refit the cover.
  2. Reset the clock and check your settings; a few one-off warnings may show at first start and clear on a short drive.

The X-Trail doesn’t need the new 12 V battery coded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to disconnect the 12V battery on the e-Power/hybrid?

Yes — the 12 V system is isolated from the high-voltage side. Just leave the orange cables alone.

Which terminal first?

Disconnect negative (−) first and reconnect it last.

Why open the tailgate and wait?

It’s Nissan’s way to let the modules settle and power down before the battery is disconnected.

Does it need the battery registered?

No — the X-Trail doesn’t require 12 V battery coding. Just reset the clock.

For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our X-Trail Mk4 service reset guide.
