Home/Nissan/X-Trail/Mk4 (T33) 2022-Present/Enable or Disable the Stop/Start System

Enable or Disable the Stop/Start System

These instructions apply to the Nissan X-Trail Mk4 (T33) 2022-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

The mild-hybrid Nissan X-Trail Mk4 (T33, 2022–present) has a Stop/Start system that switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. If you’d rather keep it running, it’s one button to turn off. (On the e-Power X-Trail the petrol engine is a generator that the car starts and stops on its own — there’s no conventional Stop/Start button to press.)

How It Works on the mHEV X-Trail

Brake to a halt and the engine shuts off; lift the brake and it restarts smoothly via the mild-hybrid starter-generator. It only operates once the engine is warm and the 12 V battery is healthy.

How to Switch It Off

  1. With the engine running, press the Stop/Start OFF button — the “A” inside a circular arrow, on the dash or centre console.
  2. A dash light confirms the system is off, and the engine idles normally at a stop.

How to Switch It Back On

Press the button again, or simply restart the car — Stop/Start defaults back on every time you switch off and restart.

Why It Sometimes Won’t Stop the Engine

  • The engine isn’t warm yet, or the climate system is demanding heating/cooling/demist.
  • The 12 V battery charge is low — common after short trips or a battery change.
  • You’re on a slope, the steering is turned, or you haven’t fully stopped.

If it stopped working after a battery change, let the battery fully charge — see our X-Trail Mk4 battery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the X-Trail remember my Stop/Start setting?

No — on the mild-hybrid it returns to on at every start.

My X-Trail is the e-Power — where’s the button?

e-Power runs the wheels on electric motors and uses the petrol engine as a generator, starting and stopping it automatically — so there’s no Stop/Start button to switch off.

Why won’t the engine auto-stop (mHEV)?

Usually a cold engine, a low 12 V battery, or the climate system needing the engine.

Is the stopping and starting bad for the engine?

No — the mild-hybrid hardware and battery are designed for it.

If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our X-Trail Mk4 service reset guide.
