Home/Honda/Civic/Mk11 (FE/FL) 2022-Present/Replace the Key Fob Battery

Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk11 (FE/FL) 2022-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

A weak smart key is the usual reason a Honda Civic Mk11 (FE/FL, 2022–present) stops locking from a distance or shows a low-key-battery message. The fob takes one coin cell and you can change it in a couple of minutes. Note the Mk11 uses a different battery from the older Civic Mk10, so check the type.

Battery You Need

The Civic Mk11 smart key uses a CR2032 3 V coin cell. (The previous Civic Mk10 used the smaller CR1620 — don’t assume they’re the same.)

How to Replace the Key Battery

  1. Press and hold the release button and slide out the mechanical key.
  2. Open the cover at the slot left by the key.
  3. Use a small screwdriver to lift out the old CR2032, noting the orientation.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way up, observing polarity — don’t touch the flat faces.
  5. Close the cover and slide the mechanical key home.

Lock and unlock from a few metres to confirm.

If It Still Won’t Work

  • Start the car anyway — touch the smart key to the start button as you press it; the car reads the transponder directly.
  • Lock manually with the mechanical key (the driver’s door lock is behind a small cap).

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Honda Civic Mk11 key take?

A single CR2032 3 V coin cell — not the CR1620 used by the older Civic.

Do I need to reprogram the key after changing the battery?

No — it pairs again as soon as power is restored.

How do I open the Civic smart key?

Slide out the mechanical key, then open the cover at the slot to reach the cell.

My key still won’t start the car — what now?

Hold the smart key against the start button as you press it.

For a no-start with a warning light, check the code on autodtcs.com. See also our Civic Mk11 battery guide if the car is dead.
