Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on a SEAT Arona (KJ7, 2018–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip, out of reach and impossible to stand upright — so this compact SUV has a built-in mode that sweeps the arms high off the glass. It is a normal maintenance feature, not a fault, and on the Arona it is set with a specific flick of the wiper stalk rather than through a menu. Once the arms are vertical you can fit a fresh blade, clean the screen under the rubber, or lift the arms clear of settled snow without dragging them from their parked slot.

Why the Service Position Exists

The Arona parks its wipers low, resting them below the trailing edge of the bonnet where they stay out of the airflow and below your eyeline. That low park is precisely why you cannot simply lift them. Pull an arm up from rest and its tip catches under the bonnet trim: you strain the wiper linkage, risk bending the arm, and can chip or crack the plastic scuttle. Raising the arms through the service mode first carries them past that lip so they clear the bodywork before they stand up, which is the safe way to get at the blades.

First, a Few Checks

  • Check the bonnet is fully shut and latched — the service mode usually will not arm with the bonnet up, and you want the arms clearing a closed bonnet.
  • Have the ignition sequence ready: switch on, then off, then act on the stalk within the short window.
  • Make sure the blades are not frozen to the glass. Free any ice by hand or warm the screen first, or the motor can stall trying to lift them.
  • Keep the new blades to hand so a raised arm is never left standing unsupported.
  • Work one arm at a time and keep clear of the swept area as the arms rise.

Raising the Wipers

  1. Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
  2. Switch the ignition on, then off.
  3. Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
  4. The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
  5. Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.

The window is short: the stalk only commands the lift for a few seconds after the ignition goes off. If you miss it, switch on and off again and repeat the flick.

Putting Them Back

When you are done, fold each arm gently back down onto the glass — never let a loaded arm spring back on its own, as it can chip or crack the screen. Then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once. They will sweep and re-park under the bonnet lip in their normal resting spot, and the service mode clears itself.

If It Doesn’t Work

  • You were too slow — the stalk only triggers the lift for a few seconds after ignition-off; switch on, off, and flick more promptly.
  • Wrong ignition step — the car needs the on-then-off sequence first, so try again from a clean start.
  • Bonnet ajar — the interlock blocks the mode; press the bonnet down until it latches fully.
  • Blades frozen down — free them first, then retry, so the motor is not fighting the ice.
  • Wipers were not parked — the lift works from the parked position, so let them return to rest before you begin.
  • Still nothing — repeat the whole sequence once or twice; a mistimed flick is the usual cause.

Changing the Blades

With the arm standing vertical, support it so it cannot spring back against the glass while your hands are on the blade. The Arona uses a common clip-and-hook blade fitting: release the catch where the blade meets the arm, slide the old blade off the hook, and click the new one on until it locks. Give it a light tug to confirm it is seated, then lower the arm slowly onto the screen rather than releasing it. Repeat on the second arm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the SEAT Arona wipers to service position?

With the bonnet shut, switch the ignition on then off, and within a few seconds flick the wiper stalk down for a single wipe. The arms sweep up and hold vertical so you can reach the blades.

Do I need any tools?

No tools are needed. The service position is set from the wiper stalk, and the Arona’s blades clip on and off by hand. Just have the replacement blades ready before you lift the arms.

How do I get the wipers back down?

Fold each arm gently back onto the glass, then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once. They sweep and re-park under the bonnet lip on their own, and the service mode ends.

Can I just lift the wipers at their parked position?

Not safely. From park the arm tip sits under the bonnet trim, so forcing it up strains the linkage and can crack the scuttle. The service position walks the arms clear first, which is why it exists.

Why won’t my Arona enter the service position?

Usually the timing: the stalk only responds for a few seconds after ignition-off. Also check the bonnet is fully latched and the blades are not iced to the glass, then repeat the on-off-flick sequence.

Does setting the service position reset anything?

No. It only raises the wiper arms for maintenance and clears when you run the wipers again. It does not affect service intervals, warning lights, or any stored settings on the car.
