Disable Start-Stop

These instructions apply to the SEAT Ateca Mk1 (KH) 2016-present.

Your SEAT Ateca (KH, 2016–present) shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel and reduce emissions. When you’d rather it didn’t — queuing in traffic, a hot day when you want uninterrupted cooling, or before any under-bonnet work — one button switches it off. The “A” symbol on the dash is a status light for the feature, not a warning of a problem.

How Start/Stop Works on the Ateca

Whether the Ateca cuts its engine at a stop is a decision the car makes each time, not something the button forces. It checks the 12 V battery’s state of charge, whether the engine has warmed up, how much heating or cooling the cabin still wants, and whether the car is level and completely stopped. With all boxes ticked, the engine stops as you hold the brake and restarts the moment you release it (or dip the clutch on a manual). As this is a heavier SUV with a larger electrical load, battery condition matters a lot — a weak 12 V battery is the usual reason it stops cutting out.

Before You Start

  • Ignition on and engine running — the button only works on a live system.
  • Choose your setting before moving off; it resets at the next engine start.
  • Turn it off first for engine-bay jobs so it can’t auto-restart on you.
  • Locate the button near the gear lever in advance, not while driving.

Turning Start/Stop Off

  1. Locate the AⓇ button (an “A” circled by an arrow), usually near the gear lever.
  2. Press it once; the indicator confirms the system is off and the engine stays running at stops.

Why It’s On Again Next Time

The Ateca switches Start/Stop back on at every ignition cycle — there’s no permanent off from the factory. Tap the button once at the start of each drive if you don’t want it.

If the Engine Won’t Cut (Or Won’t Stay Off)

If the Ateca keeps idling at a stop despite Start/Stop being enabled, run through these first:

  • Cold engine. Right after a cold start it waits for coolant temperature to come up before it will stop.
  • Weak 12 V battery. The most frequent cause; low charge inhibits the stop to guarantee a restart. A worn AGM/EFB battery does the same even when it still cranks fine.
  • Climate load. Full air-con or heating in extreme temperatures keeps the engine turning for the compressor and heater.
  • Gradient or partial stop. On a slope, or if the car is still rolling slightly, the engine stays on.
  • Driver inputs. Steering movement at a standstill, or an open door/undone seatbelt, can block the stop.
  • Keeps re-arming. Expected — there’s no permanent off, so press the button on each drive.

What to Expect After

Once disabled, the indicator shows Start/Stop is off and the engine idles normally at every stop for that journey. Nothing is saved and nothing is harmed — start the car again and the system rearms to its default. Leaving it on is equally fine; the engine just cycles off and on at stops as designed, trimming a little fuel use in town.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I switch off auto Start/Stop on a SEAT Ateca?

With the engine running, press the AⓇ button near the gear lever once. The dash indicator confirms it’s disabled and the engine will idle instead of cutting out at your next stop. Repeat it each time you drive, because the setting doesn’t carry over from one journey to the next.

Can I turn it off permanently?

Not from the standard settings. The Ateca re-enables Start/Stop each time you start the engine, so there’s no built-in toggle to keep it off for good. The button is the only supported way to disable it for a drive. Some independent specialists can recode the default, but that’s beyond the factory menus.

Why did it switch itself back on?

Cycling the ignition off and on resets the function to its default enabled state — normal behaviour, not a fault. Just press the AⓇ button again at the start of your next drive if you’d prefer the engine to keep running at stops.

Why won’t the engine stop at lights sometimes?

The Ateca only stops the engine when conditions allow: a healthy 12 V battery, warm engine, satisfied cabin climate, and a level, stationary car. If the battery is low, the engine is still warming up, or the air-con is working hard, it keeps running by design so it can restart instantly and maintain your cabin temperature.

Is it bad to leave Start/Stop on?

No. The battery and starter are built for frequent cycling, and leaving it enabled saves a little fuel in stop-start driving. Many Ateca owners simply leave it on and only disable it in specific situations — heavy traffic, extreme weather, or before working under the bonnet.

Could a warning symbol mean my battery is failing?

Frequently, yes. A Start/Stop fault symbol, or an engine that consistently won’t stop, usually points to a weak or ageing 12 V battery — and an SUV’s higher electrical load makes this more likely. Have its charge and health tested; a fresh battery of the correct type commonly restores normal operation.

If a start/stop fault symbol shows, it usually points to a weak 12 V battery — see our Ateca battery guide, or look the code up on autodtcs.com.
