These instructions apply to the Lexus GS Mk4 (L10) 2012-2020.

When the maintenance / service reminder appears on your Lexus GS (2012–2020) — the GS 300h / 450h hybrid or the petrol GS 250/350 — you can clear it yourself after a service using the dashboard. No dealer needed. The message is simply a mileage- and time-based reminder that a scheduled service is due; it is not a fault, and clearing it once the work is finished takes less than a minute using the car’s own menus.

What the Service Reminder Means

The GS uses a scheduled-maintenance reminder rather than a live oil-condition sensor. It tracks how far you have driven and how long it has been since the counter was last reset, then displays a spanner symbol or a ‘Maintenance Required’ / service message when the next interval is reached. Because it works on distance and elapsed time, it will appear whether the car has covered a lot of motorway miles or sat mostly unused — both count toward a service being due.

It is important to understand that this reminder does not measure the actual condition of your oil, brakes or any other component. It is a calendar-and-odometer prompt, nothing more. That is also why it will not clear on its own after an oil change: the counter has to be reset manually so it can start measuring the next interval from zero. If the reminder is showing but you have no record of a recent service, treat it as a cue to have the car’s maintenance schedule checked.

First, a Few Checks

Reset only after the service is done. Switch the ignition on, not READY (don’t press the brake when you press START). Resetting before the work is completed simply hides a reminder that is still valid and throws off the next interval. You need no tools and no diagnostic equipment — everything is done from the driver’s seat.

  • Park on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • Have the engine off but the ignition/electronics on so the instrument display is lit.
  • On hybrids (GS 300h / 450h) this means pressing START without your foot on the brake, so the car powers up its electronics but does not enter READY.
  • Give yourself a moment to read the on-screen prompts — the menu wording is short and easy to miss.

Resetting the Reminder

  1. Switch the ignition on (not READY).
  2. Using the steering-wheel controls or the Remote Touch screen, open Setup / Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance (or ‘Scheduled Maintenance’).
  3. Select the engine oil / maintenance item and confirm the reset.

Cars without the menu use the trip-button method: switch on (not READY), select TRIP A, switch off, then hold the trip button while pressing START twice until the display shows ‘000000’.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

If the message is still showing after you try, the reset almost always failed for one of a few simple reasons rather than a fault with the car. Work through these before assuming anything is wrong:

  • Stay in ignition-on, not READY — don’t press the brake. If the car is in READY (engine or hybrid system live), the maintenance menu often will not accept a reset.
  • Confirm the reset when prompted. The GS asks you to acknowledge the change; if you back out of the menu before confirming, nothing is saved.
  • Make sure you are on the correct menu item — the maintenance / scheduled-service entry, not a trip or fuel-economy readout.
  • Hold long enough on the trip-button method and keep pressing START twice until the display steps down to ‘000000’; releasing early cancels it.
  • Cycle the ignition fully off, wait a few seconds, and repeat the sequence from the start if the first attempt does nothing.
  • A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Once the Reset Is Done

Once the reset is accepted, the spanner symbol or maintenance message disappears immediately and does not reappear the next time you start the car. The instrument display returns to its normal layout, and the internal counter begins measuring toward the next service interval from zero. There is no need to drive a set distance for it to ‘learn’ anything — the change is instant. If the reminder returns at the next start-up, the reset was not confirmed and you should repeat the procedure.

Reset Frequency

Reset the reminder after every scheduled service, once the work has actually been carried out. The GS counts both distance and elapsed time, so the light can be triggered by either — a low-mileage car will still be prompted once enough months have passed. Rather than rely on a single fixed figure, follow the service interval in your owner’s handbook, which is the correct reference for your exact model, engine and market. Reset only when that service is complete so the next interval is timed accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the maintenance light on a Lexus GS?

Switch on (not READY), open Setup > Vehicle > Maintenance and confirm; early cars use the trip-button method.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — it’s owner-doable from the driver’s seat using the dashboard menu or the trip button, with no scan tool required.

Does the GS 450h reset differently from the petrol?

No — both use the same maintenance menu. The only practical difference is that on the hybrid you power the electronics up without pressing the brake so the car does not enter READY.

It cleared but came back — why?

The reset probably wasn’t confirmed; repeat it and make sure you acknowledge the on-screen prompt before leaving the menu.

Is the service light the same as an oil-pressure or engine warning?

No. The maintenance reminder is just a scheduled-service prompt. A red oil-pressure light or an amber engine light signals a possible fault and should not be cleared by this procedure — have it investigated instead.

Will resetting the reminder erase any fault codes?

No. Resetting the service counter only clears the maintenance reminder; it does not touch stored diagnostic trouble codes, which need to be read and cleared separately.
