Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Jeep Gladiator Mk1 (JT) 2020-Present.

After an oil change or service on your Jeep Gladiator (2020–present), you can clear the oil-change / service reminder yourself with a simple pedal sequence. No diagnostic tool needed. The message is a maintenance prompt, not a fault warning — it simply signals that the mileage or time counter has reached the point where the next oil change is due, and once the work is done you tell the truck to start the countdown again.

What the ‘Oil Change Due’ Message Means

On the JT Gladiator the service indicator refers to the engine oil. The truck keeps track of how far you have driven and how long it has been since the last reset, and when that reaches the scheduled point it displays an oil-change message on the driver information display. It is a reminder that runs on a counter, not a live sensor reading of the oil itself, so it will keep appearing until you reset it — even after the oil has been changed. Resetting is what zeroes the counter and begins the next interval.

Because the message is only a maintenance prompt, it does not mean anything is wrong with the engine. A genuine mechanical or electrical problem shows a different warning light and records a fault code that a scan tool can read; the oil-change reminder does neither.

Before You Begin

The service indicator on the JT Gladiator refers to the oil change. Only reset it after the oil and filter have actually been done.

What the service (spanner) light means on the Jeep Gladiator Mk1, and that a reset clears it after a service.

Before you run the sequence, check these points:

  • Finish the service first. Change the oil and filter before resetting, so the new interval reflects fresh oil.
  • Park safely. Put the truck in Park on level ground with the parking brake set.
  • Ignition on, engine off. You need the electronics awake but the engine not running — that is the state the pedal sequence looks for.
  • No tools required. The whole reset is done with the accelerator pedal and the ignition; you do not need any equipment.
  • Know the timing. The pedal presses must happen quickly — read the steps through once before you start so you are not fumbling against the clock.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON — do not start the engine. (Keyless: press START/STOP without the brake.)
  2. Within 10 seconds, press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times.
  3. Turn the ignition to LOCK / off.
  4. The reminder is reset — repeat the procedure if it’s still showing.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

If the message is still on screen afterwards, the sequence almost always just needs repeating cleanly. Check the following:

  • Stay in ignition-on, engine off — don’t start the engine. If the engine fires, the truck ignores the pedal input; switch off and begin again.
  • Do the three accelerator presses within 10 seconds. Press the pedal firmly to the floor and release fully each time so every press registers.
  • Repeat the whole sequence if the timing was off. Turn the ignition fully off, wait a moment, then start from step one.
  • Give it a full ignition cycle. Powering the electronics all the way down and back up before retrying clears any half-finished attempt.
  • A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

After the Reset

When the reset takes, the oil-change message disappears and the counter restarts from zero. The next time you start the truck you should see the normal display with no maintenance prompt. Nothing else is affected — the reset only touches the oil-change counter, so your trip meters, settings and other displays stay exactly as they were. If the message clears and then reappears at the next start-up, the sequence did not fully register and is worth repeating.

How Often You’ll Need This

Reset the indicator once each time the oil and filter are changed. The counter is set to run down roughly in line with the recommended oil-change interval, but how quickly it counts down depends on how the truck is driven and the schedule it follows, so use the message as a prompt to service rather than a fixed deadline. For the exact mileage or time interval that applies to your Gladiator, follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s handbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the oil/service light on a Jeep Gladiator?

Ignition on (engine off), press the accelerator 3 times within 10 seconds, then switch off.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — this pedal sequence is owner-doable. Everything is done with the ignition and the accelerator pedal, with no scan tool needed.

It didn’t work — what went wrong?

Usually the engine was started or the three presses weren’t within 10 seconds. Switch off, wait a moment, and run the sequence again with the engine off and firm, full pedal presses.

When should I reset it?

Only after the oil change is done, so the next interval is correct. Resetting before the work simply hides the reminder without restarting a meaningful countdown.

Does the pedal need to go all the way down?

Press it firmly and release it fully each time so each of the three presses registers within the ten-second window.

Is the oil-change message a warning that something is wrong?

No. It is a scheduled maintenance reminder, not a fault. A real problem shows a different warning light and stores a diagnostic code.

If another warning light appeared with the service message, our sister site autodtcs.com can help you decode it.
