Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Jeep Gladiator (2020–present) is a straightforward job for an owner with basic tools — whether you are fitting a new battery, isolating the electrics before body or accessory work, laying the truck up for a season, or clearing up after a jump-start. The trick is simply to work in the right order with the ignition genuinely off, so the Gladiator powers back up cleanly and relearns almost everything by itself. The battery is in the engine bay.

Where the 12 V Battery Is
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover (same side on left- and right-hand-drive trucks). Lift the bonnet, unclip or lift the cover, and identify the two terminals before you reach for a spanner: the negative (−) post carries the black earth lead, while the positive (+) post carries the red lead, usually protected by a hinged red cap. Some Gladiators also carry a small auxiliary battery to support stop/start, but the main 12 V battery is the one you service and disconnect. Note your radio presets before you start.
First, a Few Checks
- Confirm the ignition is fully off — no dash lights, engine stopped.
- Move the key fob well away from the truck so it cannot wake the electronics.
- Switch off the lights, heater, radio and everything else, and close the doors and tailgate.
- Write down your radio presets and settings, and have any audio security code ready.
- Wait a couple of minutes after switching off so the modules power down.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, and have the correct spanner to hand.
Disconnecting
- Switch everything off and let the truck settle.
- Slacken and lift off the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive — negative always comes off before positive.
- Tuck each lead aside so it cannot spring back onto its post.
- Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait 2 minutes after disconnecting before starting that work.
Reconnecting
- Refit the positive (+) terminal first and tighten it down.
- Refit the negative (−) terminal last and tighten it.
- Check both clamps are secure — a loose clamp causes intermittent faults — and refit the cover.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
With power restored, the Gladiator will want a few things put back:
- Clock and audio presets re-entered, plus any radio security code.
- Power windows (if fitted) re-initialised — hold the switch fully up, then fully down at the limits so one-touch and anti-pinch relearn.
- A like-for-like battery when renewing — trucks with stop/start expect the correct type so charging stays right.
- Any warning lights that appear at first usually self-clear after a short drive once the modules re-synchronise.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Truck Feels Off
- Check both terminal clamps are fully tight and free of corrosion.
- Take a short, gentle drive so the systems can relearn before you worry.
- Repeat the window re-initialisation if one-touch is still lost.
- Rule out a genuinely flat or aged battery, which can trip its own warnings.
- If a light stays on, it has logged a fault code you can look up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Jeep Gladiator?
In the engine compartment, under a cover, in the same place on left- and right-hand-drive trucks. Some Gladiators also carry an auxiliary battery for stop/start, but the main 12 V battery is the one you disconnect and service.
Which terminal do I disconnect first?
Take the negative (−) terminal off first and reconnect it last. When reconnecting, the positive (+) goes back on first, then the negative, and both clamps are tightened down.
What needs resetting afterwards?
Mainly the clock and audio presets. If fitted, the power windows may need re-initialising by holding the switch at the fully-up and fully-down limits so one-touch and anti-pinch relearn. Warning lights that appear usually clear on a short drive.
Does a new battery need coding on the Gladiator?
A like-for-like 12 V swap runs without special coding. On trucks with stop/start, fit the correct type so the charging strategy stays accurate; some workshops register a new battery to keep that management precise.
Will disconnecting the battery clear fault codes or the service light?
It can clear some temporary stored codes and messages, but a genuine fault simply returns, so it is not a proper fix. It will not reliably reset the mileage-based service reminder, which follows its own schedule.
Can I jump-start it instead of disconnecting?
If the battery is only flat, jump-starting is quicker and avoids the resets. Disconnecting is for renewing the battery, isolating the electrics, or long storage — not for reviving a discharged one.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
