These instructions apply to the Jeep Cherokee Mk4 (KK) 2007-2013.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Jeep Cherokee (2007–2013) — the KK, sold as the Liberty in some markets — is a straightforward job most owners can manage with a single spanner. You might be fitting a new battery, laying the car up for winter, recovering after a flat, or making the electrics safe before working near the airbags. There’s nothing intimidating about it: what counts is taking the terminals off (and putting them back) in the correct order, and knowing the handful of things the Cherokee will want re-set once power returns. Do it in sequence and the car wakes up cleanly, relearning most of the minor settings within a short drive.

Where the 12 V Battery Is
On the Cherokee KK the 12 V battery lives in the engine compartment, under a cover that lifts or unclips out of the way. With it removed you’ll see the two posts: the negative (−) terminal on a black lead that earths to the body, and the positive (+) terminal on a red lead, usually under a flip-up cap. Identify both clearly before you touch a spanner — the whole procedure depends on treating them in the right sequence.
Getting Ready
- Turn the ignition fully off, take the key out of the barrel and keep it away from the car.
- Switch off the lights, blower, radio and any accessories that might be drawing power.
- Note your radio security code if the Cherokee uses one, plus your station presets.
- Leave the car a couple of minutes after switch-off so the modules power down before you disconnect.
- Have the right spanner ready (the clamp nuts are usually 10 mm), with gloves and eye protection.
Disconnecting
- Confirm everything is off and the key is out and clear of the vehicle.
- Slacken the clamp on the negative (−) terminal first, lift the lead off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back onto the post.
- Now slacken and remove the positive (+) lead.
- If you’re going to work near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 2 minutes after disconnecting before you begin, so any stored charge has bled away.
Reconnecting
- Refit the positive (+) terminal first, seating the clamp fully before tightening.
- Refit the negative (−) terminal last and nip both clamps up firmly — snug, not overtightened.
- Check neither lead can rock on its post; a loose clamp is the most common cause of odd electrical behaviour afterwards.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
Cutting power wipes the Cherokee’s short-term memory, so a few small resets are normal:
- Clock and radio presets, and the security code if fitted, need re-entering.
- Power windows lose one-touch/auto — re-initialise each by holding the switch fully up until the glass stops, then fully down, at the limits.
- Trip and service reminders may reset; cruise and other driver aids simply resume.
- Some warning lights may glow briefly, then self-clear once the car has been driven a short distance.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Re-check both clamps are clean and tight — a poor connection can throw several warnings at once.
- Take the Cherokee for a short drive so the modules relearn and transient lights clear.
- The gear lever won’t leave ‘P’ after a flat battery (automatics)? Use the console emergency release — see our KK shift-lock release guide.
- If the windows still won’t auto, repeat the up-then-down re-initialise routine.
- A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com, and rule out a genuinely old or flat battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Jeep Cherokee (2007–2013)?
In the engine compartment, under a cover that unclips out of the way. Lift the cover and the negative and positive terminals are on top of the battery.
Which terminal do I take off first?
Take the negative (−) off first when disconnecting and put it back last when reconnecting; the positive (+) goes on first on refit. That order stops a spanner shorting against the body.
What needs resetting afterwards?
The clock, radio presets and any security code, plus the one-touch window function. Trip data may reset, and a few warning lights can linger until the Cherokee has been driven a short way, after which they clear themselves.
Does a new battery need coding on the KK?
A like-for-like replacement of the same type and capacity generally needs no coding on this generation. Fit it, reconnect in the correct order and re-do the small resets — just match the battery to the original specification.
Will disconnecting clear fault codes or the service light?
It may clear some transient codes and trip data, but a genuine fault will re-log its code as soon as the car detects it again. It isn’t a reliable way to switch off a real warning or a due service reminder.
How long should I wait near the airbags, and can I jump-start instead?
Wait 2 minutes after disconnecting before working on airbags or pretensioners. If you only need to get a flat Cherokee going, though, a jump-start does the job without touching the terminals — disconnecting is for renewal, storage or safe airbag work.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
