Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Porsche Cayenne (2018–present) — the 9YA — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags is straightforward, but there are a couple of Porsche-specific steps to get right.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment (right-hand side, under a cover). On the E-Hybrid there is also a high-voltage traction battery under the luggage floor — never touch the orange high-voltage cabling; you only ever work on the 12 V.
Disconnecting Safely
- Switch the ignition off and keep all keyless transmitters well away from the car (outside range) so the car can’t wake up.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or pretensioners? Insulate the earth cable and wait 1 minute before such work.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The Cayenne then relearns a few items:
- Power windows / sunroof — one-touch needs re-initialising (see our Cayenne window-reset guide).
- Steering angle and assistance systems settle after a short drive.
- Re-enter the clock and presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights often clear after a short drive once the relearns complete.
- A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
- Fit a like-for-like AGM battery of the correct spec; coding a new battery to the energy manager needs Porsche equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the 12 V battery on a Porsche Cayenne (9YA)?
In the engine compartment, right-hand side under a cover. The E-Hybrid’s high-voltage battery is separate — never touch its orange cabling.
Why keep the key away?
So the car can’t wake and power up circuits while you’re disconnecting.
Which terminal first?
Negative (−) off first, reconnect it last.
Do I need to code the new battery?
For a like-for-like swap the car works; registering the new battery to the energy manager needs Porsche diagnostic equipment.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
