Your Porsche 718 Boxster or Cayman (2016–present) — the 982 — has no dipstick. You check the engine oil level electronically through the instrument display. Here’s how to get an accurate reading.
Get the Conditions Right First
- Park on a level surface.
- Start the engine and run it at idle until warm — until the oil temperature reaches about 80 °C.
- Turn the engine off and wait at least one minute so the oil drains back.
Reading the Level
- With the ignition on, use the multifunction display and scroll to ‘Measure engine oil level’.
- The display shows the current level — top up only if it’s low, a little at a time, and re-measure.
Tips
- Don’t overfill — add a small amount, wait, re-measure.
- Use the correct Porsche-approved oil grade for your engine (check your handbook).
- A cold or recently-running engine reads wrong — the warm-up and 1-minute wait matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check the oil on a Porsche 718 with no dipstick?
Warm the engine to ~80 °C, switch off, wait a minute, then read ‘Measure engine oil level’ in the instrument display.
Why is there no dipstick?
The 982 uses an electronic oil-level sensor read through the display.
How much oil do I add?
A small amount at a time, re-measuring between each — don’t overfill.
The reading seems off — why?
The engine wasn’t warm/level, or you didn’t wait a minute after switching off; redo the steps.
If an oil-pressure or level warning light is on, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
