If a window on your Porsche 718 Boxster or Cayman (2016–present) — the 982 — has lost its one-touch up/down — usually after a flat or disconnected battery, or a fuse change — you can re-initialise it yourself in under a minute. No tools. This is expected after the glass loses 12 V power, not a fault, and it’s the same relearn a technician would run once the supply is restored.
Why It Happens
Each window’s control module learns its fully-up and fully-down stops. Cut the power and that memory is lost, so one-touch and anti-pinch stop working until you re-teach the limits. (The frameless door glass also drops slightly when you open the door — that relies on the same learned positions.)
How It Works on the 718
The 982 Boxster and Cayman run frameless door glass, so the window does more than provide one-touch convenience — it has to index itself against the seal every time the door opens and closes. Pull the handle and the glass drops a few millimetres to clear the seal; shut the door and it rises back to seal the cabin. All of that depends on the module knowing precisely where “fully closed” sits. Lose the 12 V feed and those reference points disappear, which is why the auto-drop and one-touch stop together until the relearn is complete.
Getting Ready
- Switch the ignition on so the windows are powered.
- Keep the door closed throughout so the glass reaches its true sealed position.
- Make sure the glass and seal are clear of ice or debris so travel isn’t obstructed.
- Do one window at a time and stay at that switch until it’s finished.
Re-initialising a Window
Do this with the door closed and the ignition on, one window at a time:
- Pull the switch up and hold until the window is fully closed; keep holding for 1–2 seconds after it stops.
- Press the switch down and hold until the window is fully open; keep holding briefly after it stops.
- Pull up again to fully close and hold briefly — one-touch, anti-pinch and the door-open auto-drop are now relearned.
- Repeat for the other window.
If It Still Won’t One-Touch
- Hold the switch past each limit — letting go early aborts the learn.
- Do it with the door shut so the glass reaches its true closed position.
- Cycle the ignition off and on once if the battery was only just reconnected, then try again.
- Check the relevant fuse if a window is completely dead rather than just hold-to-move.
- A faulty regulator or switch can block the learn — any stored fault can be looked up on autodtcs.com.
What Happens Next
Once the sequence takes, a single tap runs the window fully up or down, anti-pinch is active again, and the glass drops and re-seals cleanly each time the door opens and closes. The learned positions are stored, so they stay set through normal use — you’ll only need to repeat this after another battery disconnection or flat battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my 718’s window stop going up with one touch?
The window module lost its learned limits, usually after a battery disconnection, a flat battery, or a fuse change on that circuit. The glass and motor are fine — the electronics have reverted to hold-to-move mode until you re-teach the top and bottom stops with the quick switch relearn.
The glass no longer drops when I open the door — same fix?
Yes — the frameless auto-drop uses the same learned positions, so re-initialising the window restores it. After the relearn, the glass will again drop a few millimetres to clear the seal as the door opens and rise back to seal once it’s shut, exactly as before.
Do I need any tools?
No — it’s done entirely with the window switch. There’s no diagnostic tool or workshop equipment involved. Power up the car, keep the door closed, and hold the switch through each limit. That’s all the module needs to store the fully-up and fully-down positions again.
It still won’t work — now what?
Repeat carefully, holding a second or two past each limit and keeping the door shut. If it still fails, cycle the ignition off and on and try once more. Should it continue to fall short, a regulator or switch fault may be stored — check autodtcs.com.
Do I have to relearn both windows?
Only the window that lost one-touch strictly needs it, but on the 718 it’s worth doing both sides after a battery job so the auto-drop indexes correctly on each door. Each takes only seconds, so there’s little reason to leave one until later.
Will this happen again next time the battery is disconnected?
Yes — any future battery disconnection or flat battery wipes the learned limits again, and the windows return to hold-to-move. It’s harmless, and the same short relearn restores one-touch and the door-open auto-drop each time, so it’s handy to know the routine if you work on the car yourself.
