Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your RAM 1500 (DS, 2011–2019) — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags — is a straightforward job. The battery is in the engine compartment.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under the bonnet. Some 1500s carry a second (auxiliary) battery — the main starter battery is the one you disconnect for normal work. Note your radio presets before you start.
Disconnecting Safely
- Turn the ignition off and make sure all electrical consumers are off.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The 1500 then needs a few items relearned:
- Power windows — re-initialise one-touch (see our window initialisation guide).
- Tyre pressure monitor — drive to re-store the pressures.
- Re-enter the clock and radio presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
- A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
- Fit a like-for-like battery — the big petrol/diesel V-engines need a strong battery of the correct size and rating.
