Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Daewoo Matiz (M200/M250) 2005-2010. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Daewoo Matiz (M200/M250, 2005–2010) is one of the most common jobs an owner does without a workshop — whether you are fitting a replacement, putting the car into winter storage, or working safely near the airbag circuits. The Matiz is a simple, light city car from before the stop-start era, so the procedure is straightforward, but doing it in the right order matters for your safety and to avoid a stubborn warning light afterwards.

Why Disconnect the Battery?

  • Fitting a new battery — the original eventually loses its ability to hold charge, especially after a cold winter or a long period standing.
  • Long-term storage — disconnecting the negative lead stops the small “parasitic” drain (clock, alarm, radio memory) from flattening the battery while the car sits unused.
  • Electrical work — any job near the airbag, the pretensioners, or the wiring loom should start with the battery isolated.

What You’ll Need / Before You Start

You need very little: a spanner or socket for the terminal clamp nuts (typically 10 mm), and ideally a wire brush and some terminal grease for the posts. Gloves and eye protection are sensible — battery acid is corrosive and a careless spanner can short across the terminals.

  • Park on level ground, apply the handbrake, switch off the ignition and remove the key.
  • Note your radio security code and preset stations first. Many Matiz head units lock when power is lost and ask for a code before they will play again. The code is usually on a card supplied with the car or stamped on the radio body; if you do not have it, find it before you disconnect.
  • Memory-saver tip: to keep the clock, radio code and stored settings alive, plug a 12 V memory saver into the cigarette-lighter socket before you remove the leads — it keeps a trickle of power on the memory circuits. Do not rely on it while working near airbags; for that work the car must be fully isolated.
  • Keep the area clear of sparks and flames — a battery can give off a small amount of hydrogen gas.

Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, in the usual front corner, held down by a clamp at its base. Open the bonnet and you should spot it easily — it is a small unit, in keeping with the car’s tiny three-cylinder engine. If a plastic cover is in the way, lift it clear first. The positive (+) post usually carries a red cover; the negative (−) post connects to the car’s body/earth.

Disconnecting Safely

  1. Switch everything off — ignition off, lights off, key removed.
  2. Loosen and remove the negative (−) terminal first. Slacken the clamp nut, ease the clamp off the post and tuck the lead aside so it cannot spring back. Taking the earth off first means that if your spanner touches bodywork while you work on the positive side, there is no live circuit to short.
  3. Then remove the positive (+) terminal the same way.
  4. If you are working near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait a few minutes after disconnecting before going near those components — this lets any stored energy in the system dissipate.
  5. If you are removing the battery, undo the hold-down clamp and lift it out keeping it upright.

Choosing the Right Battery

The Matiz uses a conventional flooded lead-acid (SLI) starter battery — it is a small petrol car with no stop-start system, so it does not need the more expensive EFB or AGM batteries fitted to modern stop-start vehicles, and it does not need battery coding or registration when you swap it. A like-for-like replacement is typically around 40 Ah with a cold-cranking rating in the region of 330 A, in a compact case. Always confirm the figures against the label on your existing battery and check the terminal layout before buying — match what came out, and make sure the new one fits the hold-down clamp.

Reconnecting

Reconnect in the reverse order — positive first, then negative:

  1. Make sure the battery is clamped down and the posts are clean. A light smear of terminal grease helps prevent corrosion.
  2. Fit the positive (+) terminal first and tighten the clamp until it is firm — not over-tightened.
  3. Fit the negative (−) terminal last. You may see a tiny spark as it touches; that is the car’s memory circuits drawing power and is normal.
  4. Check both clamps are secure — a loose terminal causes intermittent no-start and flickering electrics.

What to Re-initialise After Reconnecting

Cutting the power wipes the car’s short-term electrical memory. The Matiz is a basic car with very little to relearn, but you should expect the following after the battery has been off:

  • Clock and date — reset the time on the instrument/radio display.
  • Radio presets, and possibly the security code — the stored stations are lost, and many Matiz head units of this era ask for the anti-theft code before they will play. Re-enter the code you noted earlier, then re-store your presets.
  • One-touch electric windows — if a window had a one-touch feature and it stops working, re-teach it by holding the switch fully in the relevant direction for a couple of seconds after the window reaches its limit.
  • Engine idle — the engine may idle slightly unevenly for the first minute or two as the management system relearns; let it warm up and it should settle.
  • Warning lights — a lamp or two may show briefly; most clear after a short drive.

Troubleshooting

  • Radio asks for a code: enter the anti-theft code. If you have lost it, it can usually be retrieved from the radio’s serial number via a dealer — do not guess repeatedly, as some units lock out after several wrong attempts.
  • Car won’t start / clicks only: check both terminals are clean and tight. A loose or corroded clamp is the most common cause of a no-start straight after a battery job.
  • Warning light stays on: a persistent lamp has stored a fault code. Drive a short distance first; if it remains, read the code on autodtcs.com.
  • Window won’t auto-close: repeat the one-touch relearn, holding the switch at the limit until the feature is recognised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Daewoo Matiz?

In the engine compartment, in the usual front corner, secured by a hold-down clamp. Lift any plastic cover out of the way to reach the terminals.

Which terminal do I disconnect first?

Always remove the negative (−) terminal first and reconnect it last. When refitting, connect the positive (+) first, then the negative.

Will I lose my radio code?

Quite possibly — many Matiz head units lock when power is lost. Note the code (and your preset stations) before you disconnect so you can re-enter it afterwards.

Does the Matiz need its battery coded or registered?

No. The Matiz has no stop-start system, so a standard flooded battery is fine and there is no electronic coding or registration step — just fit a like-for-like unit.

What battery does the Matiz take?

A compact conventional lead-acid starter battery, typically around 40 Ah with a cold-cranking rating near 330 A. Always match the size, rating and terminal layout to the battery you remove — check the label rather than assuming.

How long should I wait near the airbags after disconnecting?

Give it a few minutes after removing the terminals before working on or near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, so any stored energy in the system has time to dissipate.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting the battery, the car has stored a diagnostic trouble code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
