When the touchscreen in your Cadillac CT6 (2016–2020) locks up, goes black, or stops answering taps, you’re dealing with CUE — Cadillac User Experience. The CT6 launched with a second-generation CUE that’s noticeably quicker than the early ATS/CTS version, but it’s still software that can hang, especially after updates or when juggling phone projection, navigation and apps at once. A frozen CT6 screen is almost always a software lock-up rather than a dead panel, and you can reboot it from the driver’s seat in under a minute without losing presets, pairings or saved destinations.
How CUE works on the CT6
Unlike the ATS and CTS, the CT6 pairs its CUE touchscreen with a console-mounted rotary controller (and on many cars a touchpad), so you can drive the menus without reaching for the screen. Crucially, the CT6 does not have the flip-up faceplate that older CUE cars use for a hard reset — that procedure simply doesn’t apply here. Instead you reboot the CT6 with the Power control and, if that fails, by cycling power through the ignition and battery. The second-gen CUE is faster but still occasionally stutters or freezes; rebooting clears it.

Soft reset: hold the Power control (about 10 seconds)
- Leave the ignition in RUN — don’t shut the car off yet.
- Find the Power/Volume control to the left of (or below) the display.
- Press and hold it for roughly 10 seconds until the screen goes dark.
- Keep holding until the Cadillac crest reappears, then release.
- Wait 30–60 seconds for CUE to finish loading before you interact with it.
This resolves most CT6 freezes. If the control is unresponsive because the system is fully locked, move to the power-cycle steps below.
Is it safe? Yes — no data is lost
A soft reset on the CT6 only restarts the CUE software. It keeps your radio presets, Bluetooth pairings, saved navigation destinations, home/work addresses, profile settings and audio preferences. You can reboot it whenever the screen acts up with zero downside. The only thing that erases personal data is the deliberate factory reset at the end of this guide — a normal restart never touches it.
If it stays frozen
- Ignition off-and-soak: Switch the car off, open the driver’s door, lock it and walk away for 10–15 minutes so every module drops to sleep. A full power-down clears software locks a quick restart leaves in place. (There is no faceplate to flip on the CT6 — ignore guides that mention one.)
- Use the rotary controller: If the touch layer is frozen but the menus still move, you can sometimes reach Settings with the console knob to trigger a restart from there without touching the screen at all.
- Pull the radio/infotainment fuse: Removing the CUE fuse for a couple of minutes forces a cold boot. Verify the exact fuse in the owner’s manual before pulling.
- Disconnect the 12V battery: As a last resort, disconnect the negative terminal for 10–15 minutes to fully reset the hardware. The CT6’s 12V battery is in the trunk on most builds — check your manual for the location and any reset steps, and be ready to re-set the clock.
Factory reset (this erases your data)
Only do this if the screen still responds and the reboots above haven’t cured a persistent fault. From the home screen tap Settings, open the system/general settings area, and choose Return to Factory Settings (Restore Vehicle Defaults), then confirm. This wipes paired phones, presets, saved destinations and personalisation back to factory state. Note anything you want to keep first, because you’ll need to re-pair your phone and rebuild presets and favourites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the CT6 have the flip-up faceplate hard reset like older Cadillacs? No. That trick is specific to the ATS, CTS and XTS faceplate design. The CT6’s dash doesn’t fold up, so you reboot it with the Power control or a full power-cycle instead.
Is CT6 CUE less freeze-prone than the ATS/CTS version? Generally yes — the CT6 shipped with second-generation CUE, which is faster and more stable. It can still hang after updates or under heavy multitasking, but a reboot clears it just the same.
Will rebooting drop my Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and paired phone? A soft reset keeps your Bluetooth pairings, and phone projection simply reconnects when you plug back in. Only the menu-driven factory reset removes pairings and wipes data.
Where is the CT6’s battery if I need a full power-down? On most CT6 builds the 12V battery sits in the trunk rather than under the hood. Check your owner’s manual for the exact location and any disconnect/reconnect notes before going that route.
The screen reboots but freezes again within minutes — what does that mean? Repeated freezing after a clean reboot points to a software bug that a dealer update may address, or occasionally a failing screen/module. If a software update doesn’t settle it, have it diagnosed.
If a warning light or fault code appeared alongside the infotainment problem, you can look it up at autodtcs.com to find out whether it’s related or a separate issue worth chasing.
