If the remote on your Ford Focus (Mk3, 2011–2017) has died and the doors will not respond, do not assume you are going nowhere. The third-generation Focus — hatch, estate and saloon, including the ST and RS — hides a metal emergency blade inside the fob, and there is a backup way to start it on a flat battery whether you have the standard bladed ignition or the optional Ford Power push-button system.
The Mk3 came in two distinct starting setups, and the correct method depends on which one your car has. Most Focus Mk3s use a blade you slot into the ignition and twist. Cars fitted with the KeyFree / Ford Power pack use a START/STOP button and a fob you keep in your pocket — until the coin cell goes flat. Check which you have before you begin.
Start a Ford Power (Push-Button) Focus With a Dead Fob
If your Mk3 has the START/STOP button, the immobiliser can still authenticate the key at very close range, but this generation does not have a tidy drop-in slot. Instead you hold the fob against the backup reader. Do this:
- Get into the car first using the emergency blade (see the next section) — the door buttons are dead with a flat fob.
- Sit in, press the brake pedal and hold it.
- Hold the flat face of the fob against the START/STOP button so the passive transponder sits as close as possible to the reader coil behind it.
- Press the button through the fob. The immobiliser powers the chip, reads it and releases the engine.
- The engine starts. If it does not catch first time, reposition the fob slightly — the read zone is small — and press again.
A “Key not detected” or key symbol on the cluster is the cue to use this contact-start method on a push-button Mk3.
Unlock the Focus With the Emergency Key Blade
A metal blade is hidden inside the fob for exactly this job.
- Pinch the small ridged tabs near the keyring on the back of the fob and lift the “Ford” cover to release the metal blade, then pull it out.
- Go to the driver’s door. The lock cylinder hides behind a small plastic cap on the door handle. Slip the blade into the slot at the rear edge of the cap and prise the cover off to expose the barrel.
- Insert the blade and turn it to unlock the door — usually the driver’s door only on the Mk3; a second turn or the interior central-locking switch frees the rest.
- If you have the standard bladed ignition rather than Ford Power, slide that same blade into the ignition barrel and turn it to start the car as normal. A flat fob battery never stops a twist-key Focus starting.
Why the Immobiliser Still Lets You In
The Mk3’s immobiliser does not depend on the coin cell to verify your key. Inside the fob is a passive transponder that takes its power from the car’s reader coil by induction, exactly like a contactless card. The flat battery only kills the long-range radio that unlocks the car from a distance. Hold the fob to the button (or twist the blade in the ignition) and the short-range coil powers the chip directly, so the car still recognises it as your key and disarms the immobiliser. This is why a battery-free spare blade key would still start it.
Replace the Key Fob Battery
- Pinch the side tabs and lift the rear “Ford” cover, then remove the emergency blade.
- Split the fob halves with a thin coin or plastic pry tool.
- Lift out the old cell. The Focus Mk3 fob uses a CR2032 3V coin cell.
- Fit the new battery + side up, the same way the old one sat, handling it by the edges.
- Clip the case back together, refit the blade and test the buttons. Expect 2–3 years from a fresh cell.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Focus Mk3 has a normal turn key. Does the dead battery stop it starting? No. The flat battery only disables the remote locking. Get in with the blade in the door and start with the same blade in the ignition; the coin cell plays no part in starting a bladed-ignition Focus.
Where do I hold the fob on a push-button Focus Mk3? Flat against the START/STOP button. This generation has no drop-in cubby slot, so the button face is the read point.
Where is the hidden door lock on the Focus Mk3? Behind a clip-off plastic cap on the driver’s door handle. Prise the cap from its rear edge to reach the barrel.
How do I open the fob to fit a new battery? Pinch the ridged tabs near the keyring and lift the rear “Ford” cover; the blade and case release together.
Which battery does the Focus Mk3 fob take? A CR2032, a standard 3V coin cell available everywhere.
