Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

These instructions apply to the DS 7 Crossback Mk1 (X74) 2017-Present.

The DS 7 Crossback (2018–Present) uses a fully electronic parking brake built on the same PSA/Stellantis EMP2 architecture as its Peugeot and Citroën siblings: each rear caliper has its own motorised actuator that clamps directly onto the caliper, controlled by the P switch on the centre console. There is no cable and no lever. Before you can change the rear pads, those motors must be driven to a maintenance position electronically — and on the DS 7 that requires a diagnostic tool, not an owner button sequence.

What service mode does and why the DS 7 needs it

With the parking brake applied, each rear caliper motor has wound its spindle forward to hold the pad against the disc. In normal use the system retracts only slightly — never enough to fit a new full-thickness pad — and it can re-clamp the moment the brake control unit powers up when you switch on the ignition. Service mode (PSA’s caliper dismantling or replacement position) drives both motor actuators fully back and then holds the EPB inactive so it cannot grab while the caliper is removed.

Honestly stated: the DS 7 Crossback has no dashboard or touchscreen routine to do this. You need the factory Diagbox/Lexia software or a generic OBD scan tool with confirmed PSA/Stellantis electronic parking brake coverage. Connect to the OBD port under the dash, select the EPB / rear-brake module, and run the pad replacement routine. As an added anti-clamp precaution PSA documentation notes the battery may be disconnected so the actuators can’t re-apply once the ignition wakes — but that is on top of the tool, not instead of it. The tool retracts the motors only; it does not push the piston back.

Retract the caliper safely

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and keep the ignition off until the tool prompts you.
  2. Connect Diagbox (or a PSA-capable EPB tool) to the OBD socket and select the electronic parking brake module.
  3. Run the rear-brake pad-replacement routine so both motor actuators move to the dismantling position and the EPB is disabled.
  4. Raise the car, remove the rear wheels, unbolt the caliper, and push the piston straight in with a piston-press or a flat-plate clamp.
  5. Fit the new pads, rebuild the caliper, and refit the wheels.

Critical warning: never force the EPB pistons back by hand and never use a rotating wind-back tool. The DS 7 motor caliper retracts on a fine internal screw thread; turning or hammering the piston shears that thread and destroys the caliper. Retract electronically with the tool first, then push the piston in a straight line only.

Exit service mode and bed in the pads

Once the new pads are in, use the tool to run the EPB end-of-replacement / calibration routine so the motors re-reference the new pad thickness and the handbrake clamps correctly. If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it first. Before driving, press the brake pedal firmly several times to seat the pistons against the discs — the first pull feels long until they take up. Cycle the P switch to confirm it clamps and releases, check the brake-fluid level, and clear any stored EPB codes. Brake gently for the first 200–300 km so the new pads bed in evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DS 7 Crossback really have motor-driven rear calipers?
Yes — a motorised actuator sits on each rear caliper and acts directly on it, with no handbrake cable.

Can I release it for a pad change without a tool?
No. There is no owner service routine. You need Diagbox or a scan tool with genuine PSA EPB support to set the dismantling position.

Why is the battery sometimes disconnected during the job?
It’s a belt-and-braces step so the actuators can’t re-apply when the ignition wakes — an addition to the tool routine, never a replacement for it.

Why mustn’t I rotate the piston?
The motor screw has already retracted, so the DS 7 piston is pushed straight in. Rotating it winds against the screw and strips the thread, scrapping the caliper.

Do I have to recalibrate the EPB afterwards?
Yes. Run the calibration / end-of-replacement routine so the motors learn the new pad thickness, otherwise the handbrake may hold weakly or trigger a warning.

If your DS 7 Crossback shows a brake or EPB warning lamp and you want to read the stored fault code before starting work, you can decode it at autodtcs.com.
