Open the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

These instructions apply to the Ford Focus Mk3 (DYB) 2011-2017. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 11, 2026

The Ford Focus (Mk3, 2011–2017) has a built-in instrument cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode you can open yourself with no scan tool. On this generation it is reached using the steering-wheel OK button rather than a dash trip button, and it gives you a gauge sweep, a display and warning-lamp check, live engine data and any stored cluster fault codes — all from the driver’s seat.

What the self-test is and what it shows

This hidden routine drives the Mk3 cluster through a sequence of self-checks. It sweeps the needles, lights each warning LED, and runs an LCD segment test so you can spot a dead pixel or a stuck gauge. It then exposes a string of live and stored data screens:

  • Digital speedometer (road speed) and tachometer (RPM)
  • Engine coolant temperature as a numeric value
  • Battery voltage at the cluster
  • Fuel level and fuel flow / consumption data
  • Stored cluster Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

It is the cluster reporting on itself and on the sensors feeding it, which makes it a quick, free first check before paying for diagnostics.

How to enter the hidden diagnostic menu

  1. Sit in the driver’s seat with the ignition fully OFF.
  2. Press and hold the OK button on the steering wheel.
  3. While holding OK, turn the ignition switch from position 0 to position II (ON) — do not start the engine.
  4. Keep OK held until TEST appears in the cluster display.
  5. Release the OK button within about three seconds of TEST showing, or the cluster drops straight back out of the mode.

If your Mk3 has the dash trip-reset button instead, the alternative is to hold that button while turning the ignition to position II and release when tESt shows.

Reading the gauges, voltage and codes

Use the steering-wheel arrow / OK controls to move through and skip tests. Start with the needle sweep, indicator LED check and LCD segment test — a missing segment or unlit lamp points to a cluster hardware fault rather than a sensor. Continue to the live-data pages for road speed, RPM, coolant temperature, fuel flow and battery voltage. With the engine off a healthy battery reads around 12.4–12.7 V. The DTC screens list any stored cluster codes, or show a "none" result if clear; note them before exiting.

How to exit

Turn the ignition to OFF to leave Self-Diagnostic Mode. The cluster returns to normal at the next start and nothing you viewed has been changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Focus Mk3 has no dash trip button — can I still do this? Yes. Use the steering-wheel OK-button method, which is the standard route on Mk3 clusters with the central message display.

Why does TEST flash up and vanish instantly? You held OK a moment too long after TEST appeared. You must release it within roughly three seconds or the cluster exits immediately. Try again and let go promptly.

Does this reset the oil-life or service light? No. The self-test only reads and displays data; the service indicator and trip meters are untouched.

Are these the same codes as a check-engine scan? Not quite. These are cluster-level DTCs. If the engine warning lamp is on, follow up with a full OBD-II scan of the engine ECU.

Does it work on the Focus ST and RS Mk3? Yes — the performance models share the Mk3 cluster, so the OK-button sequence works and their specific gauges are included in the sweep.
