Keeping the transmission fluid in good condition is essential for smooth shifting and long gearbox life. This step-by-step guide explains how to check, drain, and refill the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) on the BMW 5 E39 with the ZF 5-speed automatic gearbox (5HP19).
Preparation
Park the vehicle on a flat surface.
Secure the wheels and apply the parking brake.
Move the gear selector into position P.
Place a drain pan beneath the transmission.
Draining the Transmission
Remove the drain plug and allow the old fluid to drain completely.
Detach the transmission oil pan.
Clean the magnets inside the pan.
Replace the pan gasket and reinstall the oil pan.
Fit the drain plug again and tighten by hand.
Refilling the Transmission
Ensure the transmission fluid temperature is below 30°C before refilling.
Remove the fill plug.
Add fresh ATF until fluid begins to flow out of the level opening.
Reinstall the fill plug loosely.
Start the engine and let it idle.
While pressing the brake pedal, shift through each gear, pausing for 3 seconds in each position. Repeat this cycle several times.
Remove the fill plug again and continue filling until fluid escapes from the level hole.
Final Level Check
Warm the ATF to 40–50°C (test temperature).
Top up fluid if necessary until it drips from the fill port.
Install a new fill plug and tighten securely.
Connect a diagnostic tool and follow on-screen instructions to confirm fluid level.
Torque Specifications
Drain plug: 35 Nm
Fill plug (always replace): 30 Nm
