Many BMW 5 Series models no longer have a traditional dipstick. Instead, the oil level is monitored electronically through the onboard iDrive system. Here’s how to properly check and top up the engine oil on a BMW 5 Series (F10, F11, F18).
General Instructions
Start the engine and drive until it reaches normal operating temperature.
Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface.
Keep the engine running while checking the oil level.
Do not press the accelerator pedal during the procedure.
Note: the oil level sensor will not indicate if the engine has been overfilled.
Checking Oil Level via iDrive
Press the MENU button on the iDrive controller.
Select Vehicle Info.
Go to Vehicle Status.
Choose Engine Oil Level.
Wait a few seconds until the measurement is completed.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Topping Up Oil
If the system shows that more oil is required, add only the amount specified on the display.
Never overfill, as too much oil can damage the engine.
⚠️ Tip: Always use the recommended BMW-approved engine oil for your 5 Series.
