Home/Bentley/Continental GT/Mk2 (393/394) 2011-2017/Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Bentley Continental GT Mk2 (393/394) 2011-2017. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Bentley Continental GT / GTC (393/394, 2011–2017) — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags — is straightforward once you know the battery is in the boot. These cars have a dual-battery setup (a main battery and a starter battery).

Find the Batteries First

The batteries are in the luggage compartment (boot), under the carpet and covers — a main battery and a starter battery. Note your radio presets and user settings before you start.

Disconnecting Safely

  1. Turn the ignition off and wait about 60 seconds.
  2. Remove the luggage-compartment carpet and the relevant battery cover.
  3. Disconnect the earth/negative (−) cable first, then the positive.
  4. Working near airbags or pretensioners? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting.

Reconnecting and Re-initialising

Reconnect positive first, then negative (don’t grease the terminals). The Continental then needs a few items settled:

  • Power windows — re-initialise one-touch (hold the switch at the limits).
  • Air suspension re-levels once driving.
  • Re-enter the clock and presets.

If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards

  • Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
  • A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
  • Fit like-for-like batteries of the correct type and rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Bentley Continental GT (393)?

In the luggage compartment (boot) — there’s both a main battery and a starter battery under the carpet.

Which terminal first?

Negative/earth (−) off first, reconnect it last.

Why are there two batteries?

The Continental uses a main battery plus a dedicated starter battery; for normal work follow the cover labelling in the boot.

How long should I wait near the airbags?

Give it a few minutes after disconnecting before working on airbags or pretensioners.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
