Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Bentley Continental GT (3S, 2018–2022) — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags — is straightforward once you know it lives in the boot, not under the bonnet.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the luggage compartment (boot), under the carpet and a cover. Note your radio presets and user settings before you start.
Disconnecting Safely
- Turn the ignition off and wait about 60 seconds.
- Remove the luggage-compartment carpet and the battery cover.
- Disconnect the earth/negative (−) cable first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or pretensioners? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative (don’t grease the terminals). The Continental then needs a few items settled:
- Power windows — re-initialise one-touch (hold the switch at the limits).
- Air suspension re-levels once driving.
- Re-enter the clock and presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
- A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
- Fit a like-for-like battery — the correct AGM type and rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Bentley Continental GT?
In the luggage compartment (boot), under the carpet and a cover — not in the engine bay.
Which terminal first?
Negative/earth (−) off first, reconnect it last.
Do I need to recode anything?
Windows may need a one-touch relearn, the air suspension re-levels on driving, and you’ll re-enter the clock and presets.
How long should I wait near the airbags?
Give it a few minutes after disconnecting before working on airbags or pretensioners.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
