Your BMW 2 Series (G42, 2021–present) uses Condition Based Servicing (CBS) — it tracks each service item separately and shows the one that’s due. After doing the work you clear that item yourself from the instrument cluster, no dealer tool needed.
Before You Reset
Only reset once the job is actually done. Reset ‘Engine oil’ first if both oil and vehicle-check are due, and make sure the on-board clock is correct — a battery disconnect stops it and can upset the reset.
Resetting a CBS Item
- Close all the doors.
- Press the start/stop button quickly three times (no foot on the pedals). On keyless cars this wakes the ignition; otherwise turn the ignition on.
- Press and hold the trip/BC button on the cluster for about 10 seconds until the first service item appears.
- Press the button repeatedly to scroll to the item you’ve done (e.g. Engine oil).
- Press and hold 3 seconds — ‘Perform reset?’ shows.
- Press and hold 3 seconds again — ‘Reset successful’ confirms it.
If It Won’t Reset
CBS only lets you reset an item once it’s dropped to 90% of its life or less. A nearly-new item simply won’t offer the reset — that’s normal.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the service light on a BMW 2 Series?
Close the doors, wake the ignition, hold the cluster trip button ~10s, scroll to the item, then hold 3s and confirm with another 3s hold.
Do I need a BMW diagnostic tool?
No — CBS resets are built into the dashboard.
Why can’t I reset the item?
It must be at 90% of its life or less; a fresh item won’t allow a reset yet.
Does each service have its own counter?
Yes — oil, brakes, vehicle check and more are tracked and reset individually.
Resetting after a battery change? Set the clock first — see our 2 Series battery guide. For a warning code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
