Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on a Cupra Ateca (KH, 2020–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up. There’s nothing wrong when the arms won’t simply pull up from park; that low resting spot is by design, keeping the wipers out of view and off the paint when they’re switched off. The service position is what you want whenever you’re fitting new blades, standing the arms upright before a cold night so the rubber can’t freeze to the glass and tear, or reaching into the scuttle to clear leaves and grit. On this SUV the arms are raised with a quick wiper-stalk sequence, and once you’ve got the timing it’s done in seconds.

Why the Service Position Exists
When the Ateca’s wipers switch off, the arms settle low against the scuttle with the pivot end tucked partly under the trailing edge of the bonnet. That deep park keeps them out of your line of sight and reduces wind noise, but it also means there’s very little of the arm to take hold of. Pull one straight up from park and you’re working it against the bonnet lip and the arm’s return spring together — the quickest route to a bent arm, a snapped blade clip, or a chip in the bonnet paint. The service position sidesteps that entirely by sweeping both arms up the glass to a near-vertical rest point, where there’s clearance behind them and the hinge can fold forward cleanly.
First, a Few Checks
- Close the bonnet fully — open, it sits right in the arms’ swing path, so the mode won’t arm until the latch is home.
- Have the ignition ready to switch on and straight back off — the trigger window only opens for a moment after ignition-off.
- Make sure the blades aren’t frozen to the glass — free them with de-icer or warm (not boiling) water first, so the motor doesn’t stall lifting a stuck arm.
- Have the new blades unpacked and ready before you raise the arms, so they don’t stand under tension longer than needed.
- Work one arm at a time and keep clear of the sweep as the sequence fires.
Raising the Wipers
- Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
- Switch the ignition on, then off.
- Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
- The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
- Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.
Putting Them Back
With the job done, fold each arm back down onto the screen by hand — don’t let a spring-loaded arm snap onto bare glass, because the impact can crack it. Once both arms are lying flat, switch the ignition on and run the wipers once; they’ll cycle and drop back into their normal low parked spot under the bonnet lip.
Won’t Lift?
- Too slow — the stalk only works for a few seconds after ignition-off; cycle the ignition and flick it again more promptly.
- Bonnet ajar — latch it fully; if it isn’t quite closed the mode stays locked out.
- Wrong ignition state — you want ignition on then off, not the engine running; repeat the sequence cleanly.
- Blades frozen down — if the arms strain but don’t rise, clear the ice from the rubber first, then retry.
- Stalk not registering — a firm, brief single-wipe flick reads better than a slow hold; give it one more go.
Changing the Blades
With the arm standing vertical, steady it with one hand so it can’t spring back while you work. Blades on this generation generally use a clip or hook fitting: press the release tab, slide the old blade off the hook, and push the new one on until it clicks home. Give it a gentle pull to confirm it’s seated, then lower the arm slowly onto the glass rather than releasing it. Repeat on the other arm, lowering each one by hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set the Cupra Ateca wipers to service position?
With the bonnet shut, switch the ignition on then off, and within a few seconds flick the wiper stalk down for a single wipe. The arms sweep up and hold vertical so you can lift them off the glass.
Do I need any tools?
No — it’s all done with the wiper stalk. Just your hands, plus the new blades if you’re renewing them.
How do I get the wipers back down?
Fold both arms flat onto the screen by hand, then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once. They’ll sweep and re-park themselves under the bonnet lip.
Can I just lift them straight up from park?
Best avoided. Parked, the arms sit under the bonnet trim with little clearance, so forcing them up can bend an arm or chip the trim. The service position lifts them clear first.
Why won’t it enter the service position?
Usually timing — the stalk flick has to come within a few seconds of ignition-off. Also check the bonnet is fully latched and the blades aren’t iced to the glass, then repeat the sequence.
Does using service position reset anything?
No. It only moves the wiper arms and leaves service reminders, fault codes, and settings untouched. It’s purely a mechanical convenience for blade changes and winter parking.
