Set the Air Suspension to Jack Mode

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 18, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Mk5 (WL) 2022-Present.

If your Jeep Grand Cherokee (2022–present) is fitted with the Quadra-Lift air suspension, you must put it into Tyre Jack Mode before you raise the vehicle on a jack or a lift. Left in its normal state the suspension keeps trying to hold the car at its set ride height, so as one corner lifts it pumps air to compensate — which can strain the air struts, upset the lift, or even drop the vehicle. Tyre Jack Mode is the manufacturer’s built-in answer: a quick touchscreen setting that freezes the suspension so it holds still while you work. It’s standard preparation before any wheel-off job, not a sign of a fault, and it takes only a few seconds to set.

Why This Matters

Air suspension constantly adjusts ride height. While you’re jacking the car that’s dangerous — the system can pump air in or out under the lift, changing the height of a corner just as you commit weight to the jack. Tyre Jack Mode locks the suspension so it stays put while you work, keeping the ride height fixed instead of chasing a level it can no longer reach. Setting it first is what makes a wheel change or an under-car job safe on a Quadra-Lift car.

Getting Ready

  • Park on firm, level ground and apply the parking brake — the suspension holds height, not the car itself.
  • Switch the ignition on so the touchscreen and suspension controls are live; you don’t need the engine running to set the mode.
  • Confirm the car actually has Quadra-Lift — only the air-suspension models need this; coil-sprung Grand Cherokees don’t have the setting.
  • Have your jack and axle stands ready and know the correct jacking points before you lift.
  • Chock a wheel that stays on the ground for extra security while a corner is raised.

Activating Tyre Jack Mode

  1. Park on level ground and switch the ignition on.
  2. On the touchscreen, select ‘Controls’ (or the vehicle settings area).
  3. Select ‘Settings’, then scroll to ‘Suspension’.
  4. Select ‘Tyre Jack Mode’ and confirm.
  5. The suspension is now locked for jacking — raise the vehicle at the correct jacking points.

If It Won’t Engage

  • The option is greyed out or missing: the car may not be at rest, the ignition may not be fully on, or a door may be open — settle the car, close everything, and try again.
  • A suspension warning is already showing: the system may refuse to enter jack mode until an existing fault is cleared, so note the message before proceeding.
  • The height is still changing after you select it: wait for the suspension to finish settling; only lift once it has genuinely stopped adjusting.
  • You can’t find the menu: the exact wording of the suspension area varies with the screen software on this generation, so look for the vehicle or suspension settings rather than an identically named item.

Afterwards

  • Lower the vehicle, then cancel Tyre Jack Mode in the same menu (or it cancels once you drive off, per your handbook).
  • Let the suspension re-level before driving away — the ride height adjusts itself back to normal.
  • Check no suspension warning remains once the car has settled and you’ve pulled away gently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Tyre Jack Mode to lift my Grand Cherokee?

Only if it has the Quadra-Lift air suspension — then yes, always activate it before jacking. Coil-sprung models don’t adjust their own height and don’t have the setting, so they can be lifted normally. If you’re unsure which you have, look for the air-suspension controls on the touchscreen.

Where is the setting?

On the touchscreen: Controls > Settings > Suspension > Tyre Jack Mode. The wording of the suspension area can vary slightly with the screen software, but it lives inside the vehicle settings rather than the main menu, and it asks you to confirm before it locks the height.

What if I jack it without Tyre Jack Mode?

The system may try to re-level under the jack, which is unsafe and can damage components — always set the mode first. Pumping air into or out of a strut while a corner is off the ground can shift the car on the jack or overwork the air suspension, so it’s not a step to skip.

Does it cancel itself?

It typically cancels once you drive off; check it’s off and let the car re-level before driving. If you prefer, cancel it manually in the same menu after lowering the vehicle. Either way, give the suspension a moment to return to its normal ride height before you set off properly.

Do I need the engine running to set it?

No — the ignition being on is enough to reach the touchscreen and the suspension controls. Keeping the engine off is fine for a wheel change. Just make sure the battery is healthy, since a very weak 12 V supply can leave the air-suspension system reluctant to respond.

A suspension warning appeared after jacking — is that normal?

A brief message while the system re-levels can be normal, but one that stays lit is worth checking. First confirm Tyre Jack Mode has actually cancelled and the car has settled; if the warning persists it usually stores a fault code you can look up before deciding what’s needed.
