The Kia Picanto JA (2017–present) requires a correct procedure when disconnecting or reconnecting the battery to avoid electrical issues and to ensure that features such as windows and the trip computer are re-initialized properly. This guide explains the DIY-friendly steps.
Before Disconnecting the Battery
- Make sure the ignition is switched OFF and the key is removed.
- Switch off all electrical consumers (lights, radio, climate control).
- If your audio system requires a security code, check that you have it before disconnecting.
- Make a note of preset radio stations, clock settings, and user preferences.
How to Disconnect
- Open the bonnet and locate the battery.
- With a 10 mm spanner, loosen the clamp on the negative (–) terminal first and remove it.
- Next, loosen and remove the positive (+) terminal.
- If you are removing the battery completely, undo the retaining clamp or bracket and lift it out carefully (it can be heavy).
After Disconnecting
- If working near pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbags, seat belt pretensioners), wait at least 3 minutes before starting work.
- Always store the battery upright in a dry, ventilated area if removed.
How to Reconnect
- Place the battery back in the tray and secure it with the bracket.
- Connect the positive (+) terminal first and tighten securely.
- Then connect the negative (–) terminal and tighten.
- Check that the clamps are tight and free from corrosion.
After Reconnecting
- Reprogram and reset the trip computer settings.
- Reset the date and time on the display.
- Re-enter your radio security code (if required) and restore preset stations.
- Re-initialize the power windows on the Kia Picanto JA (2017–present) by fully lowering and raising them, holding the switch for 2 seconds at the top.
- Re-initialize the electric sliding/tilting roof (sunroof) on the Kia Picanto JA (2017–present) by operating it fully open and closed once.
- Check the climate control unit to ensure it is working normally.

Troubleshooting & Tips
- If the engine struggles to start after reconnection, check that the clamps are clean and tightened properly.
- Apply petroleum jelly or dielectric grease to terminals to prevent corrosion.
- A battery typically lasts 4–6 years; slow cranking or dim lights can indicate it’s time for replacement.
- Dispose of old batteries responsibly at a recycling center.
