If the touchscreen in your Land Rover Defender (L663, 2020–Present) has frozen, gone black, or stopped responding, you can force the Pivi Pro infotainment system to restart yourself in well under a minute — no tools, no dealer, and no loss of your settings. The L663 was the launch vehicle for Pivi Pro, so the reboot is straightforward once you know the hold time.
The Pivi Pro system in the Defender L663
The L663 Defender debuted JLR’s Pivi Pro platform. Unlike the older InControl Touch Pro, Pivi Pro runs on a dedicated always-on power supply with its own small backup battery, so it boots in seconds when you get in and stays partly awake between drives. It also receives over-the-air (OTA) software updates, which is why later Defenders are noticeably more stable than the freeze-prone Touch Pro generation. That said, early L663 software was buggy, and a stalled OTA update, a rogue CarPlay session, or an interrupted accessory can still hang the screen. A forced restart clears it.
Soft reset (force restart, keeps all data)
- Stay in the vehicle with the ignition live so the screen is powered — the engine need not be running.
- Find the power / volume control on the centre console below the display.
- Press and hold it for about 20–25 seconds. Keep holding well past the point where the audio mutes.
- The display goes black, then the Land Rover logo appears — that confirms the reboot has begun.
- Release and let the home screen reload fully (around 30–60 seconds) before tapping anything.
Is this safe? Will I lose anything?
Completely safe. A Pivi Pro force-restart only power-cycles the unit. Driver profiles, paired phones, navigation favourites, presets, and your off-road/Terrain Response display preferences are all retained — nothing personal is wiped. Pivi’s backup battery keeps the restart clean and fast, and you can repeat it as often as you like.
If the screen stays frozen
- Try the reboot twice. Early L663 software sometimes needs a second hold to fully recover.
- Hold the full 25 seconds. Letting go at 10 seconds only mutes the audio — the unit reboots nearer 20.
- Finish any pending update. A half-installed OTA update is the most common cause of a stuck Defender screen — once it responds, complete it from Settings → Software updates on a strong connection.
- Lock and leave it for 10 minutes so every module sleeps, then restart.
- Persistent freezing usually means a dealer software update is due, as OTA can stall on a weak signal.
Factory reset (erases personal data)
Only do this when selling the Defender or clearing a stubborn fault — it deletes profiles, accounts, paired devices and favourites. Go to Settings → All settings → System → Reset (it may read Restore factory settings / Clear personal data), confirm, and let the unit reboot itself. Always try the soft restart first; a frozen screen almost never needs a factory wipe.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hard-reset the Defender L663 Pivi Pro screen?
Hold the power/volume knob on the centre console for about 20–25 seconds until the Land Rover logo appears, then wait for the home screen to reload. There is no separate reset button on the L663.
Why does my early Defender keep freezing?
Launch-era L663 software had several infotainment bugs that JLR addressed through over-the-air and dealer updates. Most freezes trace back to a stalled OTA update or a phone-projection glitch. Keeping the software current sharply reduces them.
Will restarting Pivi Pro delete my profile or off-road settings?
No. A force-restart only power-cycles the unit. Profiles, paired phones, favourites and your display preferences stay put. Only a deliberate factory reset removes them.
The screen is stuck on the Land Rover logo — what now?
That is usually a stalled software update. Hold the volume knob to force a restart; if it returns and still prompts for an update, let it finish from Settings → Software updates with a strong connection.
Do CarPlay and Android Auto reconnect after the reset?
Yes. Your wireless CarPlay / Android Auto pairing is stored and reconnects automatically once the system has rebooted and your phone is in range.
If a fault code appeared alongside the freeze, decode it first on our sister site autodtcs.com to see whether it is infotainment-related or something else.
