These instructions apply to the Lexus RX Mk3 (AL10) 2009-2015.

When the maintenance / service reminder appears on your Lexus RX (2009–2015) — the AL10 RX 450h hybrid or the petrol RX 350 — it is telling you that the mileage or time since the last service has been reached. It is a scheduled-maintenance reminder, not a fault or a mechanical warning. Once the oil and filter change (or the wider service) has actually been carried out, you can clear the reminder yourself in under a minute using the trip recorder button on the instrument cluster. No dealer visit and no diagnostic tool are needed.

What the service (spanner) light means on the Lexus RX Mk3, and that a reset clears it after a service.

What the Service (Spanner) Reminder Means

The RX tracks how far you have driven and how long it has been since the reminder was last cleared, and lights the spanner symbol when the next service is due. It is a simple maintenance timer — it does not measure oil condition, engine health, or a specific fault. Because of that, the reminder will keep showing until it is manually reset, even after the work is finished. If a red or amber warning light appears at the same time (for example a charge, oil-pressure, hybrid-system, or check-engine symbol), treat that separately: those indicate a fault that stores a diagnostic code, and clearing the service reminder will not make them go away.

The petrol RX 350 and the RX 450h hybrid both use the same instrument cluster and the same trip-button reset, so the sequence below is identical on either model. If you are unsure exactly what mileage or time interval your car is set to, your owner’s handbook lists the maintenance schedule for your market.

Before You Begin

  • Finish the service first. Resetting only clears the reminder — it does not change the oil or do any work. Complete the oil and filter change (or the scheduled service) before you reset.
  • Park safely. Stop on level ground with the parking brake applied and the transmission in P.
  • Ignition on, engine off. You want the electrics live but the engine not running (not in READY mode). No pedals pressed.
  • No tools needed. Everything is done with the trip recorder button and the START/STOP button.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Turn the ignition on and press the trip button to select ‘TRIP A’ on the display.
  2. Keep the trip button pressed and turn the ignition off.
  3. Without touching any pedals, briefly press the START/STOP button twice (ignition on, engine not started).
  4. Keep the trip button held until the display shows ‘000000’, then release — the system is reset.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

  • Keep the trip button held the whole time until ‘000000’ shows — releasing early is the most common reason it fails.
  • Make sure TRIP A is selected before you begin, not TRIP B or the odometer.
  • Don’t press the brake — the car must be in ignition-on, not READY. If the engine or hybrid system starts, you have gone one press too far; switch off and begin again.
  • Cycle and repeat. If it doesn’t take, turn everything off, wait a few seconds, and work through the four steps again slowly.
  • A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

After the Reset

Once the display shows ‘000000’ and you release the button, the spanner symbol goes out and the maintenance counter restarts from zero. The reminder should stay off during normal driving until the next scheduled interval is reached. If it clears but reappears immediately the next time you start the car, the reset did not complete — run through the sequence again, holding the button all the way to ‘000000’.

How Often You’ll Need This

Reset the service reminder every time the scheduled maintenance is carried out — typically once a year or at the mileage interval your handbook specifies, whichever comes first. Always reset after the work, never before, so the counter measures forward from a genuine service. Check your owner’s handbook for the exact interval that applies to your car and market rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the maintenance light on a Lexus RX (2009–2015)?

Turn the ignition on and select TRIP A, hold the trip button while switching the ignition off, press START/STOP twice, and keep holding the trip button until ‘000000’ shows.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — the trip-button sequence is fully owner-doable and needs no scanner or dealer visit.

Does the RX 450h hybrid reset differently from the petrol RX 350?

No — both use the same cluster and the same trip-button method described above.

Why does the spanner light keep coming back after I reset it?

Almost always because the button was released before ‘000000’ appeared, or a pedal was pressed and the car went into READY. Repeat the sequence carefully and hold until the zeros show.

Is the service reminder the same as a check-engine light?

No. The spanner is a maintenance timer. A check-engine or other warning light means a fault that stores a code, and resetting the service counter will not clear it.

Do I have to change the oil before resetting?

Yes — the reset only zeroes the reminder. Do the oil and filter change (or the due service) first, then reset so the counter reflects real work.
