Reinitialise the Electric Sunroof

These instructions apply to the Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN) 2013-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the electric sunroof on your Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN, 2013–2018) has stopped opening or closing properly, stops part-way, or lost its one-touch function, the roof controller needs re-initialising. It usually happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or if the roof was forced. The fix is a quick relearn you can do yourself with the roof switch, no tools.

Why the Sunroof Loses Its Calibration

The roof module stores its end positions so it can run automatically and stop if it meets resistance (anti-trap). A power loss clears those references, so until you re-teach them the roof only moves while you hold the switch. This is one of the follow-up steps in the Mazda 3 battery procedure.

Before You Start

  • Make sure the battery is well charged.
  • Clear the roof and tracks of debris so the glass can reach its end stops.
  • Keep hands and objects clear of the opening — the anti-trap protection is off during the relearn.

How to Re-initialise the Mazda 3 Sunroof

  1. Turn the ignition on — do not start the engine.
  2. Press and hold the sunroof switch to the maximum tilt-up position.
  3. Keep holding — the roof operates briefly to find its end stops and complete the relearn cycle.
  4. Release when the roof has finished moving, then check the one-touch open, close and tilt work normally.

If the function is not fully restored, repeat with the battery fully charged and the switch held to the full tilt-up position throughout.

If the Sunroof Still Won’t Auto-Operate

  • You released the switch too soon: repeat and hold to the maximum tilt position until the roof finishes its movement.
  • Weak battery: charge it and try again.
  • Dirty or dry tracks: clean the channels and apply silicone lubricant.
  • Just did a battery job: expected — see our Mazda 3 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
  • Roof leaking or slow: clear the sunroof drain channels before relying on the relearn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the Mazda 3 sunroof?

No — the relearn is done entirely with the roof switch as described.

Why did the sunroof stop working after I changed the battery?

The roof module loses its references during a power loss. Run the relearn and full function returns.

Is the anti-trap working during the relearn?

No — keep hands and objects clear of the opening while teaching the end stops.

The roof tilts but won’t slide — same fix?

Yes — the single relearn re-teaches both functions. If only one is affected afterwards, repeat with a fully charged battery.

If you also lost the windows after a power cut, see our Mazda 3 electric window guide, or clear a reminder with the Mazda 3 service indicator reset guide.
