After an oil-and-filter change the service reminder on your MG ZS (2017–2021) stays on until you clear it from the dashboard. It’s done with the steering-wheel / cluster buttons — no diagnostic tool needed.

The service reminder on the first-generation MG ZS is a simple maintenance timer, not a fault warning. When the interval the car has been counting down reaches zero, a spanner (wrench) symbol or a ‘Service’ message appears in the instrument cluster to tell you routine maintenance — typically the engine oil and filter — is due. It has nothing to do with the engine management system, and it will not affect how the car drives. Once the work has actually been carried out, the counter has to be set back to zero by hand so the ZS can start counting toward the next service.

Because it is only a reminder, the light coming on does not mean anything is wrong. Equally, resetting it does not repair or service anything — it just tells the car you have done the work. That distinction matters: if you clear the reminder without changing the oil, the car will happily run past its real service point while showing a clear dashboard.

What the Service Light Means on the MG ZS

The ZS tracks its service interval and displays the spanner symbol when that interval is up. On this generation the reminder is essentially a distance/time countdown rather than a live oil-condition monitor, so it triggers on the schedule the car has stored rather than by measuring how degraded the oil actually is. Whichever service schedule your car follows, the reminder appears when that point is reached and stays visible until it is reset. If you are ever unsure what your car’s exact service interval is, check the maintenance schedule in your owner’s handbook rather than guessing.

Before You Start

  • Do the service first. Only reset once the service is genuinely done — the reminder tracks when the next one is due, so clearing it early just hides the real due point.
  • Park safely. Stand the car on level ground with the handbrake applied.
  • Ignition on, engine off. You need the cluster and its menu awake, but the engine should not be running during the reset.
  • No tools needed. The whole procedure is done with the cluster buttons.

Resetting the Service Counter

  1. Switch the ignition on (engine off).
  2. Press the menu button repeatedly until ‘Settings’ appears on the cluster display.
  3. Use the scroll button to move through the list to ‘Next Service’.
  4. Confirm the selection with the OK button.
  5. Press and hold OK until the service indicator resets.

When it works, the spanner symbol disappears and the display returns to a normal reading, confirming the counter has restarted.

If the Reset Doesn’t Work

  • Hold OK long enough — a brief press won’t confirm the reset. Keep it held until the display changes.
  • Make sure you’re on ‘Next Service’ before holding, not on a neighbouring menu item.
  • Check the ignition is on but the engine is off. Starting the engine part-way through can drop you out of the menu.
  • Cycle the ignition and try again. Switch off, switch back on, and repeat the menu steps from the start.

What to Expect After Resetting

Once the reset takes, the spanner / service message clears immediately and does not return on the next start-up. The car begins counting down toward the next service from zero. If the reminder reappears straight away or the next time you drive, the reset did not complete — run through the steps again and make sure OK is held long enough.

How Often to Reset It

Reset the counter every time the car is serviced, right after the oil and filter change is finished. That keeps the reminder aligned with the real maintenance schedule. For the exact mileage or time between services on your particular ZS, follow the schedule in your owner’s handbook rather than assuming a figure, as it can vary by market and by how the car is used.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on an MG ZS?

Ignition on, scroll the cluster menu to Settings → Next Service, confirm, then press and hold OK until it resets.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — the ZS resets from the dashboard buttons. There is no need for an OBD scanner or a workshop visit just to clear the reminder.

Why is the reminder still showing?

You likely released OK too soon, or weren’t on the Next Service item. Cycle the ignition off and on and repeat the hold, keeping OK pressed until the display confirms.

Does this clear a warning light?

No — only the service reminder, not a fault light. If a genuine warning symbol is lit, it points to something that needs looking at rather than a routine service.

Will resetting it damage anything?

No. Resetting only zeroes the maintenance counter. It does not alter any engine or safety setting — it simply tells the car the service has been done.

Is the ZS service light the same as an oil warning?

No. The service spanner is a scheduled maintenance reminder. A separate oil-pressure or low-oil warning is a live alert and should never be cleared or ignored — investigate it before driving.

If a warning symbol (not the service reminder) is lit, look the code up on autodtcs.com. Changing the battery too? See our ZS battery guide.
