Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

These instructions apply to the Peugeot 3008 Mk2 (P84) 2016-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

On the Peugeot 3008 (Mk2/P84, 2016–Present) the handbrake is a fully electronic parking brake (EPB) with a small electric motor bolted to each rear caliper. There is no cable and no mechanical lever — the rocker marked P on the centre console drives those two motors directly. Because of that design, you cannot just release the handbrake and change the rear pads the old way. The motors have to be driven into a maintenance (dismantling) position electronically before the caliper will let go, and that step needs a diagnostic tool.

What service mode does and why the 3008 needs it

When the EPB is applied, each rear caliper motor has wound its internal spindle forward to clamp the pad against the disc. In normal driving the system can wind back a few millimetres, but it will not retract far enough to slide a new, thick pad in — and it can re-clamp the moment the ignition wakes the brake control unit. Service mode (PSA calls it the caliper dismantling or replacement position) commands both motors to fully retract their spindles and then holds the EPB inactive so it cannot grab your fingers or the caliper while you work.

On the 3008 Mk2 this is a tool-only operation. There is no owner button sequence on the motor-on-caliper EPB — the honest answer is that you need either the factory Diagbox/Lexia software or a generic OBD scan tool that genuinely supports PSA electronic parking brake service functions. Plug into the OBD port under the dash, select the EPB / rear brake module, and run the brake pad replacement (caliper dismantling) routine. Note that the tool only retracts the motors; it does not push the hydraulic piston back for you.

Retract the caliper safely

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and leave the ignition off until the tool tells you otherwise.
  2. Connect Diagbox (or a PSA-capable EPB tool) to the OBD socket and select the electronic parking brake module.
  3. Run the rear-brake / pad-replacement routine so both motors wind to the dismantling position and the EPB is disabled.
  4. Raise the car, remove the rear wheels, and unbolt the caliper. With the motors retracted, gently push the piston straight in using a piston-press or a G-clamp on a flat plate.
  5. Fit the new pads, rebuild the caliper, and refit the wheels.

Critical warning: never force the EPB pistons back by hand and never use a wind-back (rotating) tool on them. The 3008 motor caliper retracts on a fine internal screw thread; rotating or hammering the piston shears that thread and ruins the caliper. Retract electronically with the tool first, then push the piston in a straight line only.

Exit service mode and bed in the pads

With the new pads fitted, use the same tool to run the EPB end-of-replacement / calibration routine. This re-references the motors to the new pad thickness so the handbrake clamps correctly. Then, before you drive, press the brake pedal firmly several times to seat the pistons against the discs — the first pull will feel long until they take up. Apply and release the P switch a couple of times to confirm normal operation, check the brake-fluid level, and clear any stored EPB fault codes. For the first 200–300 km, brake gently to let the new friction material bed in evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put the 3008 Mk2 EPB into service mode with just the dashboard?
No. The motor-on-caliper EPB has no owner menu or button sequence for pad changes. You need Diagbox or a generic scan tool with genuine PSA EPB support to command the dismantling position.

Will pulling a fuse release the brake?
Don’t. Cutting power can leave the motors part-clamped and trips fault codes; some workshops disconnect the battery only as a final anti-clamp precaution, not as a substitute for the tool.

Why mustn’t I rotate the piston?
Unlike an old rear caliper, the 3008 piston is pushed straight in by the retracted motor screw. Rotating it winds against that screw and strips the thread, scrapping the caliper.

Do I have to recalibrate after fitting pads?
Yes. Run the tool’s calibration / end-of-replacement routine so the motors learn the new pad thickness, otherwise the handbrake may hold weakly or throw an EPB warning.

The handbrake light stays on after the job — what now?
Re-run the EPB calibration, cycle the P switch, and clear codes with the tool. A persistent warning usually means the dismantling routine wasn’t properly exited.

If an EPB or ABS warning lamp is showing on your 3008 and you want to decode the stored fault before touching the brakes, you can look the code up at autodtcs.com.
