Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Porsche Macan Mk1 (95B) 2014-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Porsche Macan (95B, 2014–Present) follows the same Porsche habit as its bigger siblings: when the key-fob battery dies you don’t rely on a push-button, you slide the fob into a key slot and twist. On the Macan that slot lives in the centre console, so the SUV starts even with a completely flat coin cell.

Start the Macan with a dead fob

  1. Open the car with the emergency blade first (next section), then sit down and close the driver’s door.
  2. Find the key slot in the centre console — on the Macan it is marked with a key symbol. If a dummy/blanking key occupies it, pull that out first.
  3. Push the flat face of the fob into the slot until it seats; the back-up reader coil energises the chip.
  4. Press the brake pedal and twist the fob to start. The engine fires and you can release.

If the dash says the key is not detected, two other spots can work: rest the fob flat on the top of the steering column near the wheel, or lay it flat against the forward edge of the centre-console cubby, then press to start.

Unlock the Macan with the emergency key blade

  1. Slide the catch on the fob and pull the metal emergency blade out.
  2. The driver’s door barrel hides behind a plastic cover on the handle; lever the cover off with the blade to expose the lock.
  3. Insert the blade and turn counter-clockwise to unlock. The alarm may chirp until the immobiliser reads the chip.

Why the immobiliser still reads a dead fob

The coin cell powers only the keyless proximity broadcast and the remote buttons. Engine authorisation uses a passive RFID transponder powered inductively by the coil in the key slot — not by the battery. Seating the dead fob in the slot still lets the Macan read the chip and start.

Replace the fob battery

The Macan fob uses one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Pull the emergency blade and use it to lever the battery cover off, or part the casing at the seam. Lift the old cell out, fit the new one + side up, and click the cover back. Remote and keyless functions return immediately with no coding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dummy key in the Macan’s slot?

Macans with full keyless Entry & Drive ship with a plastic blanking insert in the key slot. Pull it out and insert your fob in its place to start.

Where else can I hold the fob if the slot doesn’t read?

Try resting it on the flat top of the steering column closest to the wheel, or laying it flat against the front edge of the centre-console compartment, then press to start.

Which way does the blade turn in the door?

Counter-clockwise to unlock on the driver’s door. Pop the handle cover off first to reach the barrel.

Why did the alarm sound when I used the blade?

A mechanical unlock reads as forced entry until the transponder is verified. The alarm cancels the instant the engine starts.

Is it the fob or the 12V battery?

If nothing in the cabin wakes when you open the door, suspect the car’s 12V battery rather than the coin cell. A flat cell only affects the remote.

If a warning light stayed on after the no-start, look it up on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob rather than an immobiliser fault.
