These instructions apply to the SEAT Leon Mk4 (KL) 2020-present.

After an oil-and-filter change the service / spanner message on your SEAT Leon (KL, 2020–present) stays lit until you clear it. On most cars you can do it from the driver’s seat using the cluster buttons or Digital Cockpit menu — no dealer tool needed. The wrench message is a maintenance reminder, not a fault: it means the car has reached a scheduled service point, and it will keep appearing at every start-up until the counter is reset.

What the Service Light Means

The Leon works out when a service is due from distance driven and time elapsed, and keeps the oil-change and the wider inspection intervals as separate counters. When a counter runs out, the cluster shows the spanner with a service message. Because it is a countdown rather than a live oil-quality reading, changing the oil doesn’t clear it by itself — the counter has to be reset so the next interval starts from zero. It is entirely separate from the amber and red warning lamps, which point to actual faults.

Whether your car is on a fixed or a variable (‘flexible’) schedule depends on the engine and market, so check the interval figures in your owner’s handbook rather than assuming a number.

Before You Start

Only reset once the service is genuinely done — the reminder is what tracks the next oil change. A few checks first:

  • Finish the oil and filter change first. Resetting early just hides the reminder while the oil keeps ageing.
  • Park safely and level, with the electronic parking brake set.
  • Ignition on, engine off. The routine begins with the ignition off, then switches on while you hold the button — you never run the engine during the reset.
  • No tools required for the cluster routine.

What the service (spanner) light means on the SEAT Leon Mk4, and that a reset clears it after a service.

Resetting from the Cluster

  1. Switch the ignition off.
  2. Press and hold the ‘0.0’ / trip-reset button on the wiper-stalk end or cluster.
  3. Switch the ignition on while still holding — the service / wrench message appears.
  4. Release the button, then briefly press the menu/OK button to confirm.

On the Leon’s Digital Cockpit you can instead use the steering-wheel View / Car menu → Service screen. A few cars or markets need a workshop diagnostic tool — if the cluster routine won’t take, that’s why.

If It Stays Lit

If the spanner is still showing, work through these before assuming anything is wrong:

  • Hold the button before switching on — the prompt only shows if it’s already held as the ignition comes on.
  • Confirm the reset. After the message appears, release the button and press the menu/OK button; skipping that step leaves the counter un-reset.
  • Engine running? — do it ignition-on only. If it cranked, switch off and start again.
  • Reset both intervals after a full service — oil and inspection are counted separately, and one left un-reset can bring the message back.
  • Try the Digital Cockpit menu route if the button routine won’t register.

What to Expect After Resetting

Once confirmed, the spanner and service message clear from the cluster and won’t reappear at the next start-up. The counter you reset begins a fresh interval, so the reminder only comes back when the next service is genuinely due. Nothing else about the car changes — the reset only affects the maintenance timer.

How Often to Reset It

Reset the service reminder after every scheduled service it prompts for — the oil counter after an oil change, and both counters after a full inspection service. How far apart the services fall depends on your engine, driving and the schedule your car uses, so follow the interval printed in your owner’s handbook rather than a fixed figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a SEAT Leon?

Ignition off, hold the 0.0/trip-reset button, switch ignition on until the service message shows, release, then press the menu/OK button to confirm.

Do I need a dealer tool?

Usually no — the cluster routine works. Some cars/markets need a diagnostic tool if the manual reset won’t complete.

Why won’t it reset?

You must be holding the reset button as you switch the ignition on, with the engine off, and then press the menu/OK button to confirm.

Does this clear a warning light?

No — only the service reminder, not a fault light.

Why are there two service intervals?

The Leon counts the oil change and the inspection separately, so after a full service you may need to reset both prompts.

Does the engine need to be running?

No — the routine runs with the ignition on and the engine off; it actually starts with the ignition off while you hold the button.

If a warning symbol (not the service spanner) is lit, look the code up on autodtcs.com. Changing the battery too? See our Leon battery guide.
