Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on a SEAT Leon (KL, 2020–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip, out of reach and impossible to stand upright — so the Leon has a built-in mode that sweeps the arms high off the windscreen. It is a normal maintenance feature rather than a fault, and on this generation it is set with a quick flick of the wiper stalk, not through the touchscreen. With the arms vertical you can renew a tired blade, wipe the glass under the rubber, or stand the arms clear of frost before it locks them to the screen.
Why the Service Position Exists
The Leon parks its wipers low, tucking them beneath the trailing edge of the bonnet so they sit out of the airflow and below your line of sight. That deep park is the reason you cannot just lift them: pull an arm up from rest and its tip snags under the bonnet trim, straining the linkage and risking a bent arm or a cracked plastic scuttle. The service mode raises the arms past that lip first, so they clear the bodywork before they stand up and you can reach the blades without forcing anything.
Getting Ready
- Confirm the bonnet is fully shut and latched — the mode generally will not arm with the bonnet raised, and the arms need to clear a closed bonnet.
- Get the ignition sequence ready: you switch on, then off, then act on the stalk inside a short window.
- Make sure the blades are not frozen to the glass. Free any ice by hand or warm the screen first, or the motor may stall lifting them.
- Keep the replacement blades within reach so a raised arm is never left standing unsupported.
- Do one arm at a time and stay clear of the sweep as the arms rise.
Raising the Wipers
- Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
- Switch the ignition on, then off.
- Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
- The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
- Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.
Timing is the key: the stalk only commands the lift for a short window straight after the ignition goes off. Miss it and the arms stay put — just switch on and off again and repeat the flick.
Putting Them Back
When you have finished, fold each arm gently back down onto the glass. Never let a raised arm snap back on its own, because a spring-loaded arm hitting bare glass can chip or crack it. Then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once: they sweep and re-park under the bonnet lip in their normal resting spot, and the service mode clears itself.
If It Doesn’t Work
- You were too slow — the stalk only triggers the lift for a few seconds after ignition-off; switch on, off, and flick more promptly.
- Wrong ignition step — the car needs the on-then-off sequence first, so start again from cold.
- Bonnet ajar — the interlock blocks the mode; press the bonnet down until it latches fully.
- Blades frozen down — free them first, then retry, so the motor is not fighting the ice.
- Wipers were not parked — the lift works from the parked position, so let them rest before starting.
- Still nothing — repeat the full sequence once or twice; a mistimed flick is the usual culprit.
Changing the Blades
With the arm standing vertical, hold it so it cannot spring back onto the screen while your hands are on the blade. The Leon uses a common clip-and-hook fitting: release the catch where the blade meets the arm, slide the old blade off the hook, and click the new one on until it locks with a small snap. Tug it lightly to check it is seated, then lower the arm slowly back onto the glass rather than letting go. Repeat on the second arm.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set the SEAT Leon wipers to service position?
With the bonnet shut, switch the ignition on then off, and within a few seconds flick the wiper stalk down for a single wipe. The arms sweep up and hold vertical, clear of the glass, so you can reach the blades.
Do I need any tools?
None. The service position is set entirely from the wiper stalk, and the Leon’s blades clip on and off by hand. Just have the new blades ready before you raise the arms.
How do I get the wipers back down?
Fold each arm gently back onto the glass, then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once. They sweep and re-park under the bonnet lip by themselves, and the service mode ends.
Can I just lift the wipers at their parked position?
Not without risk. From park the arm tip sits under the bonnet trim, so forcing it up strains the linkage and can crack the scuttle. The service position clears the arms past that lip first, which is exactly why it exists.
Why won’t my Leon enter the service position?
Usually the timing: the stalk only responds for a few seconds after ignition-off. Also check the bonnet is fully latched and the blades are not iced to the glass, then repeat the on-off-flick sequence.
Does setting the service position reset anything?
No. It only lifts the wiper arms for maintenance and clears when you run the wipers again. It has no effect on service intervals, warning lights, or any stored settings.
