If a remote has stopped locking your Toyota Corolla (E140/E150, 2007–2014), or you have bought a spare fob, the Corolla supports an owner-level remote-programming routine done with the key and the driver’s door — no diagnostic tool needed. This guide covers programming the keyless remote(s) and renewing the fob’s button cell. Read the note below first on the difference between the remote and the immobiliser chip.
Remote vs. Immobiliser — Read This First
Your Corolla key has two separate jobs:
- The remote control locks and unlocks the car by radio. This is what the routine below programs, and you can do it at home.
- The immobiliser transponder in the key lets the engine start. Programming a brand-new transponder so the car will start needs Toyota dealer equipment or a locksmith — the home routine only covers the remote.
So this works for a remote that has lost its lock/unlock function, or to pair a spare fob for central locking, as long as the key itself already starts the car.
Understanding the Programming Modes
The Corolla’s registration system has four modes, chosen by how many times you cycle the ignition:
- Add mode (once): registers a new remote while keeping the existing ones — the mode most owners want.
- Rewrite mode (twice): erases all existing codes and registers fresh ones.
- Confirmation mode (3 times): confirms how many remotes are currently registered.
- Prohibition mode (5 times): erases all registered codes — used if a remote is lost and you want to bar it.
A maximum of 6 remotes can be registered. Note that if you add codes beyond the limit, the oldest are erased in order.
Programming a Remote (Add Mode)
- Start with the key removed from the ignition, the driver’s door open and unlocked, and the other doors closed and locked.
- Within 5 seconds, insert the key into the ignition switch and remove it again; repeat this insert/remove.
- Within 40 seconds, close then open the driver’s door twice.
- Insert the key into the ignition.
- Select the mode: turn the ignition from LOCK to ON and back at roughly 1-second intervals — once for Add mode.
- The door locks will cycle to confirm you have entered programming mode.
- Within 45 seconds, press the lock and unlock buttons together on the remote for about 1.5 seconds, then press the lock button once.
- The door locks operating once confirm the remote registered successfully. (If they operate twice, registration failed — start again.)
- Repeat for any additional remotes, then remove the key and open the door to exit.
If you fall outside any of the time windows the car drops out of programming, so work briskly and have all the fobs ready.
Renewing the Key Fob Battery
A weak cell is the usual reason a remote only works up close. The Corolla used two fob types:
Smart Key (with Entry & Start System)
- Push and hold the release knob and slide out the mechanical key.
- Insert a small flat screwdriver into the seam and gently separate the case halves — do not force it.
- Remove the old button cell without touching the terminals (and not with wet hands).
- Fit the new cell with the positive (+) side facing upwards, refit the cover and slide the key back in.
Standard Remote (without Entry & Start)
- Use a coin to twist open the button-cell cover.
- Fit a new CR2016 cell with the positive (+) side facing upwards.
- Refit the cover.
After a battery change the remote keeps its programming — you do not need to re-run the routine above.
Tools and Parts
- A small flat-blade screwdriver or a coin to open the fob.
- A fresh CR2016 coin cell (check your old one to confirm).
- Your working ignition key for the programming routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I program a Corolla key to start the car at home?
No — the home routine only programs the remote (lock/unlock). Pairing a new immobiliser transponder so the engine starts needs Toyota dealer or locksmith equipment.
How many remotes can a Corolla hold?
Up to six. Adding codes beyond that erases the oldest ones in order.
The locks operated twice — what does that mean?
That signals the registration failed. Re-check that you are in Add mode and within the time windows, and repeat the routine.
Do I need to reprogram after changing the battery?
No — the programming is retained. Just fit the new CR2016 the correct way round and check the buttons work.
