Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (J/P10) 2010-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the remote on your Vauxhall Astra J (2010–2018) — the Opel Astra J in much of Europe — has lost range, needs several presses, or has gone dead, the coin cell in the fob is almost always the cause. It is a two-minute swap. This guide covers the change and explains why programming a brand-new key is a dealer job on this car.

Rule Out the Battery First

The Astra J fob uses a CR2032 coin cell. A weak cell is behind nearly every “Astra remote not working” complaint — short range, slow response, or no reaction — so fit a fresh one before assuming the receiver or key has failed. The emergency blade (where fitted) always opens the driver’s door.

Replacing the Fob Battery

  1. Remove the key cover / split the case carefully at the seam with a small screwdriver.
  2. Lift out the old CR2032, taking care not to touch the terminals.
  3. Fit the new cell the correct way round — match the polarity of the old one.
  4. Refit the cover and press a button to confirm the remote responds.
  5. Test that it locks and unlocks from a normal distance.

Lost Key, Spare Key, or Reprogramming

On the Astra J, keys can only be programmed with a diagnostic tool, and importantly, all keys — including your existing ones — must be reprogrammed together when a new one is added (up to eight remotes can be held). That makes adding or replacing a key a Vauxhall/Opel dealer or auto-locksmith job; there is no owner button-sequence. A simple battery swap, by contrast, keeps the existing coding.

If a Fresh Battery Doesn’t Fix It

  • Recheck polarity and the contacts — a reversed cell or dirty contact gives no response.
  • Use the emergency blade to lock/unlock manually while you investigate.
  • Still nothing? A receiver or body-control fault may be involved and can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Astra J key fob take?

A CR2032 coin cell — check the old one when you open the fob.

Do I need to reprogram the remote after a battery change?

No — the coding is retained for a simple cell swap.

Can I program a new Astra J key myself?

No — new keys need a diagnostic tool, and all keys must be reprogrammed together, so it’s a dealer or locksmith job.

Is the Opel Astra J the same?

Yes — Vauxhall and Opel Astra J are the same car, so this applies to both.

If the remote stopped responding after a battery disconnection, see our Astra J battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
