Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Passat B8 (3G) 2015-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Volkswagen Passat (B8, 2015–2023) is widely fitted with Keyless Access — VW’s branded keyless-entry-and-go system — so most B8s have a START/STOP button rather than a turn-key barrel. When the fob’s coin cell dies the proximity sensing and remote buttons stop, but the immobiliser can still read the transponder if you hold the fob against the steering column.

Start the Passat B8 with a dead fob

  1. Enter the car with the emergency blade first (next section), then sit in the driver’s seat and close the door.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. On the right of the steering column, just below the wiper stalk, find the indentation marked with a key symbol and a signal icon — the back-up reader coil.
  4. Hold the flat face of the fob against that symbol and keep it pressed there.
  5. Press the START/STOP button while holding the fob in place; the engine should start.

If the cluster reports the key is not found, re-seat the fob squarely against the symbol and try again — the reader’s range is only a centimetre or two.

Unlock the Passat B8 with the emergency key blade

  1. Press the button on the side of the fob and pull the metal blade out of the body.
  2. At the driver’s door handle, look for the small box-shaped slot on the lock cap at the end of the handle. Wedge the blade into that slot and lever the cap off to expose the barrel.
  3. Insert the blade into the barrel and turn to unlock. The alarm may sound until you start the engine.

Why the Keyless Access system still authorises a dead fob

On the B8, the coin cell powers the keyless proximity broadcast and the remote-lock buttons. The chip that proves the key is genuine is a passive RFID transponder powered by the steering-column coil, not the cell. The car’s antenna reads that chip at close range even with a completely dead fob — which is exactly why the hold-against-the-column method works.

Replace the fob battery

The Passat B8 remote takes one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Slide out the emergency blade, split the case along the seam with a tape-wrapped flat tool, swap the cell + side up, and click it back together. Keyless entry and remote locking return at once with no coding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Passat B8 have Keyless Access?

Most do — look for the START/STOP button on the console and door-handle proximity sensors. If you have those, use the hold-against-the-column start; base cars with a key barrel just use the blade in the ignition.

Where exactly do I hold the fob?

Against the key-and-signal symbol on the steering column, just below the wiper stalk. The fob must touch that recess for the back-up reader to wake the chip.

How do I get the lock cap off the handle?

There is a small box-shaped opening on the cap. Insert the blade into it, wedge, and prise the cap off — the lock barrel is underneath.

The boot won’t open from the fob — is that the same fault?

Yes. The powered boot relies on the same remote/keyless signals, so a flat coin cell disables it. Once the car is running and recognised, it works again.

Could it be the car’s 12V battery instead of the fob?

If the dash is dead and nothing wakes when you open the door, suspect the 12V battery. A weak coin cell only affects the remote, never the car’s electrics.

If a warning light lingered after the no-start, look it up on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob rather than a stored immobiliser code.
