The Volkswagen Tiguan (Mk2/AD, 2016–Present) can drop all its windows — and tilt or open the panoramic sunroof — straight from the key fob. On a hot day you can stand a few metres away, hold one button, and the cabin starts venting before you climb in; spot a window left down with rain on the way and you hold the other button to wind everything shut. Volkswagen calls this convenience opening and closing, and on the Tiguan you can usually switch it on yourself from the infotainment screen.
What convenience opening and closing does
A long continuous press of the remote’s unlock button opens all the windows together; a long press of lock closes them. On Tiguans with the panoramic sunroof, the roof opens during the unlock hold and closes on the lock hold. The glass moves only while you hold the button, and when everything closes the turn signals flash once to confirm. Your key needs to be nearby for the function to respond.
How to open all the windows from the fob
- Stand within a couple of metres of the Tiguan.
- Press and hold the unlock button on the key.
- Keep holding — all the windows wind down, and the sunroof opens if fitted.
- Release the moment they reach the level you want.
How to close all the windows from the fob
- Stand next to the car within remote range.
- Press and hold the lock button continuously.
- The windows wind up and the sunroof closes while you hold.
- Release when everything is shut; the indicators flash once to confirm.
How to enable it on the touchscreen
If holding the button does nothing, check the infotainment menu. Go to Car (or the menu key) → Settings → Open & Close (or Windows, depending on the system version) and switch on convenience window opening, choosing whether the key operates all windows or the driver’s window. Make sure it is enabled here first.
If there is no such option, the feature is coded off at module level — common on US-market Tiguans and some base trims. A VAG tool such as VCDS or OBDeleven activates the radio comfort-opening parameters in the convenience control unit, after which the buttons and menu work as above.
The door-lock and driver-switch fallbacks
Two backups exist if the remote button isn’t an option. With a physical key, pull the cover from the driver’s door handle, insert the emergency blade and turn and hold toward unlock to lower the windows or toward lock to raise them. Alternatively, open the driver’s door and hold the driver-side window switch fully down for a few seconds to open all windows, or hold it up to close them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn’t holding unlock do anything on my Tiguan Mk2?
Either convenience opening is switched off in the touchscreen (Settings → Open & Close), or it is coded off at module level. Enable it in the menu first; if there is no menu option, a VCDS or OBDeleven coder activates it in the convenience module.
Does the panoramic sunroof open too?
Yes, if your Tiguan has the panoramic roof and it is enabled in the menu. Holding unlock opens it along with the windows; holding lock closes it.
Can I set it to open only the driver’s window?
On most Mk2 software you can choose between all windows and driver only in the Open & Close menu, so the key operates just the amount you want.
It worked, then stopped — what happened?
Usually a window has lost its one-touch calibration after a flat or disconnected 12V battery. Re-initialise each window (hold the switch fully up until it stops, release, hold up again briefly, repeat down) and the remote function returns.
Why must the key be nearby?
The car only runs convenience opening when it senses the key within range, both as a security measure and so you can watch the glass. Stay within about two metres and the function responds.
If a window stops answering both the door switch and the remote, or a convenience-system warning shows, the body control module has likely logged a fault code. Decode it and find the likely cause at autodtcs.com.
