These instructions apply to the Kia Picanto (JA) 2017 - Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.
The Kia Picanto JA (2017–present) is fitted with a telematics control unit that includes an emergency backup battery. This small battery ensures that functions such as emergency calling (eCall) continue to operate briefly even if the main vehicle battery is disconnected or fails. Over time, the backup battery may lose capacity and require replacement.
Location of the Telematics Control Unit
On the Kia Picanto JA, the telematics control unit is mounted behind the centre of the dashboard, directly behind the audio head unit or display screen. To reach it, the centre vent, hazard switch, and infotainment unit must be removed. The emergency backup battery is installed inside this telematics unit.
Before You Start
- Switch the ignition OFF and remove the key.
- Disconnect the negative (–) terminal of the main battery to avoid short circuits.
- Turn off all electrical equipment (lights, audio, climate control).
- Store any keyless entry transmitters away from the car to prevent accidental activation.
- Use a plastic trim tool or a flat screwdriver with protective tape to avoid scratching panels.
Removal Procedure
- Remove the instrument cluster trim using a trim tool.
- Remove the dashboard centre vent.
- Disconnect the hazard warning light switch connector.
- If the car has a standard audio system: remove the head unit and disconnect the plugs.
- If equipped with a multi-information display: remove the display control unit and disconnect the connectors.
- Disconnect the telematics control unit electrical connections and remove the unit.
- Remove the battery cover inside the telematics unit.
- Take out the backup battery.
Installation
- Insert the new backup battery in the same position.
- Refit the battery cover.
- Reconnect the telematics control unit and its connectors.
- Reinstall the display or audio system if removed.
- Reconnect the hazard warning switch and centre vent.
- Refit the instrument cluster trim.
- Reconnect the vehicle’s main battery negative terminal.
Extra Information
- Backup batteries typically last 5–8 years depending on climate and usage.
- Failure symptoms may include warning messages in the cluster or malfunction of the eCall system.
- Always dispose of old lithium backup batteries at a certified recycling centre.
