If the selector on your Mazda 2 Hybrid (MXPH11, 2022–present) will not move out of P — typically a flat 12-volt battery or an electrical fault — there is a manual shift-lock override next to the lever so you can move the car (for example onto a recovery truck). It is a get-you-going step, not a repair.
Before You Start
Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels first so the car cannot roll once it leaves P.
How to Release the Selector from Park
- Apply the parking brake and switch the hybrid system off.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Beside the selector, gently prise off the small shift-lock release cover (wrap tape on the screwdriver tip to protect the trim).
- Press and hold the shift-lock button down inside the opening.
- With the button held and the brake pressed, move the lever out of P.
- Refit the cover. Because this points to a fault, have the cause checked before relying on the car.

Why won’t my Mazda 2 Hybrid come out of Park?
The shift-lock needs 12-volt power and a brake-pedal signal to release. A flat 12-volt battery, a blown stop-light fuse or a brake-switch fault will trap the lever in P until you use the manual override.
Is it safe to drive after using the override?
Use it only to move the car a short distance. A selector that needed the override has an underlying fault (often the 12-volt battery) that should be fixed first.
Where exactly is the release?
It is a small capped opening in the trim right next to the gear lever; under the cap is a button you press while holding the brake.
