Re-initialise the Electric Windows

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk11 (FE/FL) 2022-Present.

After the 12 V battery on your Honda Civic Mk11 (FE/FL, 2022–present) has been disconnected or run flat, the one-touch (auto up/down) and anti-pinch drop out of the power windows — the glass still moves while you hold the switch, but it won’t run on its own. Re-initialising teaches each window its limits again. It takes under a minute per window, with no tools.

How It Works on This Model

Each window motor stores its fully-open and fully-closed positions so the one-touch feature and anti-pinch (which reverses the glass if it meets resistance) know where the travel ends. Cutting the 12 V power clears that memory, so the auto function and pinch protection switch off until the window relearns its end-stops. The fix is to run the glass to both limits and hold briefly so the motor re-registers them — no parts and no scan tool involved.

Before You Begin

  • Put the car in the ON mode — you do not need READY or the hybrid system running.
  • Sit at the affected door and use that door’s own switch.
  • Make sure the window channel is clear so the glass can reach the very top and bottom.
  • Keep fingers and objects out of the opening while the glass moves.
  • If you have just reconnected the battery, check it is charged and holding first.

How to Re-initialise the Windows

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode — press the START/STOP button once without your foot on the brake; the engine and hybrid system do not need to run.
  2. Fully open the window: push the switch down and hold until the glass is all the way down, then keep holding for about one more second and release.
  3. Fully close the window: pull the switch up and hold until the glass is completely shut, then keep holding up for about one more second.
  4. Release the switch — the one-touch and anti-pinch are now relearned for that window.
  5. Repeat for each window that has the one-touch feature, using that door’s own switch.

If It Still Won’t Auto-Close

  • Repeat the procedure — the brief hold at each end is what registers the limits.
  • Make sure the glass reaches the very top and bottom without dragging or stopping short.
  • Check the window fuse if a switch does nothing at all — a blown fuse leaves the motor dead rather than just un-learned.
  • Confirm the 12 V battery is healthy during the relearn; a weak supply can interrupt the routine.
  • If one-touch works one way but not the other, run the full open-then-close cycle again in one go.

After the Reset

Once relearned, a single tap of the switch runs the window fully open or closed on its own, and the anti-pinch reverse works again near the top. The settings are stored until the next time the 12 V battery is disconnected or goes flat — then you simply run the same short routine again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Civic’s windows lose auto after the battery was disconnected?

Disconnecting the 12 V battery wipes the stored end-stop positions, so one-touch and anti-pinch turn off. The glass still moves while you hold the switch; the auto feature returns only once you re-teach each window its limits.

Does the e:HEV hybrid need anything different?

No — this is a 12 V-side procedure done from the door switch. It has nothing to do with the high-voltage hybrid battery, which you never touch. Just make sure the car is in ON mode.

Do the rear windows need re-initialising too?

Only windows with the one-touch/auto feature need it. Re-teach each one that lost auto using that door’s switch; windows that only move while you hold them do not have the feature and do not need resetting.

Do I need any tools or a scanner?

No. The whole job is done from the window switch with the car in ON mode — under a minute per window, with no menu or diagnostic tool.

The window goes up a bit then stops — what’s wrong?

That is the anti-pinch reacting because the limit isn’t learned. With no valid top reference the motor treats the travel as an obstruction and reverses. Complete the full open-and-close hold routine and it clears once the closed position is stored again.

If you have just done battery work, run this alongside the other resets — see our Civic battery disconnect/reconnect guide. If a window or door-module fault code is stored, look it up on autodtcs.com.
