Re-initialise the Power Windows

These instructions apply to the SEAT Ibiza Mk4 (6J) 2008-2017.

If the one-touch (automatic) up and down has stopped working on your SEAT Ibiza Mk4 (6J, 2008–2017) — usually after the 12 V battery was disconnected — the windows need re-initialising. Each window has to be re-taught its fully-closed position, one at a time, with the ignition on. It takes under a minute per window and needs no tools.

Why the One-Touch Stops Working

When the battery cables are disconnected and reconnected, the Ibiza loses the stored top position for each window, so the automatic close/open and the anti-trap protection switch off until you re-teach them. The same can happen if a window motor loses power mid-movement. Re-initialising restores both the one-touch function and the safety anti-trap.

How to Re-initialise the Ibiza 6J Windows

  1. Switch the ignition on (engine does not need to be running).
  2. Working one window at a time, pull the switch up and hold it, sliding the glass all the way up to its fully-closed stop.
  3. Release the switch, then pull it up again for about one second against the closed stop. The automatic function is now re-activated for that window.
  4. Repeat for each remaining window. Test by briefly lifting each switch — the glass should now close fully on its own.

⚠️ Keep hands and fingers clear while re-teaching — during initialisation the anti-trap protection is not yet active, so the window will keep closing with full force.

If It Still Won’t Auto-Close

  • Do each window separately and make sure the glass reaches the very top before you release and re-pull.
  • Hold the second pull long enough — about a second at the closed stop — so the car registers the top position.
  • Note the automatic close also stops once the ignition is off and a front door is opened — that is normal, not a fault.
  • If one window still won’t learn, its switch or motor may be at fault rather than the initialisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Ibiza windows stop going up automatically?

Almost always because the 12 V battery was disconnected, which wipes each window’s stored top position. Re-initialise each window to restore the one-touch and anti-trap.

How do I reset the electric windows on a SEAT Ibiza 6J?

Ignition on, then per window: pull the switch up to fully close the glass, release, and pull up again for about a second at the closed stop.

Do I have to do every window?

Yes — each window is learned separately, so repeat the same pull-hold-release-pull sequence on all of them.

Is the anti-trap safety affected?

It switches off until you re-initialise, which is why you keep fingers clear during the procedure. Once re-taught, the anti-trap protection works again.
