Disable Start-Stop

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the SEAT Ibiza Mk4 (6J) 2008-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Start-Stop system on your SEAT Ibiza Mk4 (6J, 2008–2017) switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. If you’d rather it stayed running — in slow traffic, when manoeuvring, or driving through water — you can turn it off with the button on the centre console. It defaults back on every time you restart the car.

How to Disable Start-Stop on the Ibiza 6J

  1. With the engine running, find the Start-Stop button on the centre console (marked with an “A” inside a circular arrow).
  2. Press it once. The light in the button comes on to show the system is switched off.
  3. If the engine had already auto-stopped when you pressed it, it restarts immediately.
  4. The engine will now keep running at a standstill until you switch Start-Stop back on.

Turning It Back On

Press the same console button again — the light goes out and Start-Stop is active. In any case, the system re-arms automatically every time you switch the ignition on, so it is enabled again at your next drive; there is no way to disable it permanently from the button.

When the Engine Won’t Auto-Stop Anyway

Even with Start-Stop enabled, the Ibiza keeps the engine running when certain conditions aren’t met — for example when the battery charge is low, the cabin is still heating or cooling to the set temperature, the engine isn’t yet warm, or you’re on a gradient. That is normal system behaviour, not a fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Start-Stop button on a SEAT Ibiza 6J?

On the centre console, marked with an “A” inside a circular arrow. Press it once (engine running) to disable the system; the button lights up.

Can I turn Start-Stop off permanently?

No — the button only disables it for the current drive. It automatically switches back on each time you start the car, so you press the button again if you want it off next time.

Why does my Ibiza sometimes not stop at lights even with Start-Stop on?

The system holds the engine running when the battery is low, the climate control is still working to temperature, the engine is cold, or you’re on a slope. It resumes auto-stop once conditions are met.

Does disabling Start-Stop harm the car?

No. It simply keeps the engine running at a standstill as older cars do; you may use slightly more fuel in stop-start traffic.

If a warning light appeared alongside a Start-Stop fault, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
