Renewing a flat battery or disconnecting for other work on your SEAT Ibiza Mk4 (6J, 2008–2017)? Done in the right order it’s a straightforward driveway job — but there are two 6J-specific catches: disarm the alarm first, and be ready to re-initialise the windows afterwards. Here’s the safe sequence.

Where the 12 V Battery Is

On most 6J Ibizas the battery is in the engine bay; on some versions it sits in the boot, under the floor covering next to the spare wheel. It is a sealed, maintenance-free type — identify the negative (−, black) earth terminal and the positive (+, red) terminal before you start.

Before You Begin

  • Unlock the car with the remote first to disarm the alarm — disconnecting the battery on an armed car sets off the siren.
  • Switch the ignition fully off, take the key away, and turn off lights, fan and radio.
  • Have your radio security code ready if the stereo asks for it afterwards.
  • Wait a minute or two after switching off so the modules power down.

Disconnecting and Reconnecting

  1. With the alarm disarmed and everything off, disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+) if you’re removing the battery.
  2. To reconnect, fit the positive (+) first, then the negative (−) last; tighten both firmly and refit any cover.
  3. Switch the ignition on, let the dash run its checks, then start the engine.

⚠️ Battery charging or replacement itself needs care — SEAT specifies special knowledge and a voltage-limited charger for these sealed batteries. The disconnect above is the owner part; deep charging or a swap is best left to a specialist.

What to Re-set Afterwards

  • Power windows — the one-touch up/down needs re-teaching: re-initialise the Ibiza windows.
  • Sunroof (if fitted) — re-initialise it the same way after power loss.
  • Clock and radio — reset the time and presets, and enter the audio code if prompted.
  • Tyre-pressure lamp — a yellow tyre warning may light; it clears after a short drive, or re-store the pressures.
  • Service reminder — on LongLife cars the days-to-service figure can read wrongly for a while after a long disconnect; go by the mileage and your service book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which terminal do I disconnect first on a SEAT Ibiza?

The negative (−, black) first when disconnecting; when reconnecting, fit the positive (+) first and the negative last. Unlock the car first to disarm the alarm.

Why did my windows stop working after disconnecting the battery?

The 6J loses each window’s stored top position, so the one-touch switches off until you re-initialise each window — a two-minute job.

Where is the battery on the Ibiza 6J?

Usually in the engine bay, but on some versions under the boot floor next to the spare wheel. It is a sealed, maintenance-free type.

Do I need to code a new battery?

For a like-for-like sealed battery, no coding is needed for normal running — fit the same type and size, reconnect in order, then re-set the windows, clock and pressures.
