These instructions apply to the Nissan Sentra Mk7 (B17) 2013-2019.

The Nissan Sentra (B17, 2013–2019) has a built-in instrument-cluster self-diagnosis mode you can open yourself with no scan tool. It returns every gauge to zero, fills every information-display segment and steps each meter through a test — the quickest way to prove the cluster itself is healthy when a gauge or the display behaves oddly.

What the Self-Test Shows

  • The speedometer, tachometer, coolant-temperature and fuel gauges all return to zero together — so you can spot a stuck or lazy needle.
  • All segments of the information display light, so any dead pixel or missing segment shows up.
  • Each meter can then be stepped through its test so you can watch the needles move.

How to Enter the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

On this generation you use the steering-wheel display switch (the button on the steering wheel that changes the trip/display), not a button on the cluster face. Timing matters, so read the steps through first.

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Press and hold the steering-wheel switch, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON (do not start the engine). Trip A resets to 0000.0 — that confirms you are in.
  3. Check the trip meter reads 0000.0.
  4. Within 7 seconds of switching the ignition ON, press the steering-wheel switch at least three times.
  5. The cluster enters self-diagnosis: the gauges sweep to zero together and every display segment lights.
  6. Press the steering-wheel switch again to step each meter through its test.
  7. Turn the ignition OFF to leave the mode.

Reading the Result

Every gauge and segment should respond. A needle that will not return to zero or move, or a missing display segment, points to a fault inside the cluster rather than the sensor feeding it — for example, a fuel gauge that tests fine here but reads wrong while driving usually means the sender is at fault. If the mode will not start at all, check the cluster power/ground and the steering-switch signal; if those are good, the cluster itself is suspect.

How to Exit

Switch the ignition OFF. The cluster returns to normal at the next start — note that entering the mode zeroed trip A, so reset your trip reading if you were tracking a tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which button do I use? The steering-wheel display switch that normally cycles the trip/information display — not a button on the cluster itself.

It reset my trip meter — is that a fault? No. Holding the steering switch as you switch on deliberately zeroes trip A; that is how the mode confirms it has started.

Does this clear warning lights or codes? No — it is a display and gauge test only. It does not erase stored fault codes or reset any reminder.

The mode will not start — why? The timing is tight: hold the switch as you turn to ON, confirm 0000.0, then three presses inside seven seconds. If it still will not start, the cluster or its steering-switch signal may be faulty.
